Lessee, "positioned between the Boxster S & the 911"= bout $65K....give or take. That happens to be the estimated price
of the new Z06......the souless sonabitch that retains it's warrantee iff'n ya track it and don't have a fruitcake name.

Tough choice. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

Hey Pete:

Thanks for the info.

It's a beautiful machine & will probably sell. My take on Porsche, marketing is screwed up. They only look for short term $$ results. They are not putting down a future base for the next 5-10 years.

They don't understand the US market, Why, why would they put a name like Cayman (you hear what our guys are saying, Gaycar) on this car?? Why not stick to a Boxstr. #'s.

Why not sell this car at an affordable price & below the Bxstr. Bring young future generations into the Porsche fold. The younger generation are moving into Ricer cars because of $$'s.

My other gripe with Porsche. Everything is an option & extra. They have hundreds of extra's that should be standard. My wife's new car is not going to be German because of this price gouging. Another gripe with Porsche, Their cars require lots of maintenance $$ when taken to the dealer.

I must be getting old because the more I have to spend the more value I want for my money.

Enough said & my 2-cents worth on the Cayman.

Tom
BTW
I am looking to buy a used Bxstr. when I find the right one.

The Corvette at Boxster money debate is tired, dating back to the fifties. If a base Carrera is $69K and a 987S is $53K, I think we're gonna see this car in the $57-61K range, which is below the Z06 -- which I admit is bad ass.

But so was the last Z06. An *amazing* track car that just wasn't as much fun as a plain Boxster on a backroad, because it's like piloting a sea of fiberglass with a fantastic V8 lost under its too-wide hood. Out on a track, which is really wide, the car rocked. And, for top performance per dollar, the new Z06 will continue to be the car to beat -- if that's all that matters.

If I could afford something like that, I'd much rather have a used 993TT or 996TT. But then I'm an idiot and would probably build the world's trickest 914-4 instead. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I used to really be critical of Porsche strategy, but it's obviously been paying off since 1994 and -- names be damned -- the current cars are very, very good. Even that stupid pepper-wagon flat blows everything else like it away in terms of driving dynamics (yes, I know it is f-ugly...). The X5 4.8is feels like a Volvo Cross Country wagon by comparison.

I love old Porsches (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) , love the new ones (so long as there's a clutch pedal and a hope of future depreciation) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) ...and hate the names. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)

A "base price" Porsche? Anybody ever see one of these?......talk about rare.....
I know a guy that had a 73 911S Sportomatic....one of 7.
The base price jobbie would be more rare....but not worth near as much (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

JP's right: base-price Porsches ARE super rare.

I remember seeing a black Boxster 2.7 back in 2000 or 2001 at Stead and tripping out -- it didn't even have floor mats (ridiculous that they are optional!!!!!!!!!!!). It was $42,100 plus destination.

Never seen another one, though Sonnen has a yellow C-GT stripper right now... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) does that count?!?

pete

BTW: Did we ever come to a conclusion on how many 914 Sportos were made (I thought it was four-ish) and if any were -4s?

last number i heard on 914.6 Sportos was ~25 - same as the initial run of 917's but somehow not quite as pricey...

i heaard a rumour that there was *1* 4-cyl Sporto prototype that somehow was sent to Austrailia. i'll believe it when i see it - or more specifically - when i see the oil pump / fan housing...
