Here is a photo of my old disc brakes that I ran on my 914 during a DE event in Sebring Short track. I was using Wilwood brakes, I noticed that the car started to lock up the right front tire. During the lunch brake I decide to pull of the wheels and see why. As you can see the rotors cracked all the way I was very lucky that day.
Now I run 930 brakes, and will change to sloted brakes.

Thanks

No more drilled rotors for you. Porsche casts in the holes for this very reason.

After looking those must be stock Porsche drilled rotors.

I dont think those are oem Porsche drilled rotors. The oem rotors have many more holes in them actually, and as mentioned earlier, the hole in the oem rotors are cast, not drilled.

ps I dont think those are wilwood rotors either, AFAIK wilwood doent make a rotor that bolts direct to the Porsche hub, a "hat " or adapter is needed

If you had been using braided stainless steel brake lines and/or blue RTV with those rotors...you would have surely died.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/blink.gif)

Interesting that the cracks all seem to propagate radially, between two holes aligned with the center of the hub. If they were drilled so that no holes 'overlap' maybe it wouldn't have cracked? We'll never know I guess.

These are Porsche rotors (996TT), but I don't know how many patterns they have.

Those cracked rotors appear to be straight vane rotors also.. as opposed to curved vane rotors..

The cracks appear to propogate where two holes were drilled in one vane. It makes sense that a crack would appear in this instance.. the x-section of the rotor is least in these areas

I'm not a mechanical or materials engineer, but my guess is that two holes drilled in the same vented section of the rotor induces stress cracking between the holes. Maybe if a maximum of 1 hole per section was drilled for each side there would be less chance of a problem.

Glad you didn't have a serious incident....

Sorry for not getting back to your questions earlier, I posted this thread just before I left on my business trip, where today I finally have some time to respond.
The rotors were from Zimmerman, calipers where wildwood, I do not remember what pads I was running at that time. This has happened twice to me with this style brakes. I also have steel lines and ATE blue brake fluid, so yes I guess I was very lucky.
Then I ran a stock 911 rotor and did not have this problem, but I still was having brake flex from the 911 alum calipers.
I saved up some money and decide to buy 930 brakes all the way around, these work fine and look good and one can still fit a 15" Fuchs wheel that I run on the street.

Thanks

Interesting picture. How many track events / street miles do these discs have?

Not that many, I think two events, and maybe 1500 street miles.

I had the same problem with the New Zimmerman rotors ones and I broke them in the correct way.
Even the 930 rotors after a few hard track events you will notice small cracks aroung the holes.
A lot of racer (24Hrs of Daytona, 12Hrs Sebring)used the drilled rotos for only one big race and buy new ones for the next event. I use my 914 for the street and track. I try to do as many PCA DE and Safemotor/NASA events I can, provided that I am not working or my wife lets me.

Thanks

Time to go with drilled ceramic composite rotors (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
