I have flat spots all over my RPM scale, here's whats going on

Dwell = mid 50s....can't get a steady reading just bounces all over the place like from 1 (which means like unavailable or undefined) to 185 to 40 to 68 to 54.6 to others....i think my problem lies there....coil maybe?

Timing....on the dot. Just did it outside.

what's going on here....i have a 74 D-Jet 2.0.....

Dwell is the amount of time that the points open. I have watched the previous threads an d have you changed distributors? If the bearings or advance plate is bad it can cause fluctuations in the dwell.. So it may really be your distributor.

That's very strange. Is your distributor bearing shot? strange lobe wear? broken advance springs? Seems odd that timing can be steady and dwell could vary. You do have points right? Pertronix and the like don't have adjustable dwell.

when you set your points, did you have the pickup on the lobe of the shaft? Or on the flat of the shaft? Should have been on the lobe

Make sure the meter is hooked up NICELY, or you will get bad readings. first thing.

Ya know I just don't know what else we can do for you until you bite the bullet and get a new distributor. We have said rebuild it plus al the cautions that go along with it. Offered to sell you good ones for cheap.
YOUR DISTRIBUTOR IS FUCKED UP!!!!!!

take a look at the dist cam lobes. do they have groves in them? do they look the same? use a magnifying glass if you have to. was the car running better before you set the points than it is now?

IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE ADVANCE PLATE IS NOT MAKING SOLID CONTACT TO GROUND. Yes I'm yelling because nobody listens to me. Actually some people don't listen to anybody just keep bitching that it don't work.
Pull the advance plate apart clean it up and while you are at it adjust the shims in the shaft to take out all the up and down play. If you got side to side play you got big problems requiring rebushing the body. Cheaper to buy new one. Most of the parts are interchangable with 009 like shims and upper shaft section. No advance plate on 009 but that's OK never seen one that can't be cleaned up to work again.

QUOTE
what's going on here....

A couple of factors:

    * Your distributor is pretty-much worn out (it happens), causing your points to bounce all over the place, ergo the erratic dwell readings ...
    * You want to stick with those #$%& points instead of plucking down the 65-odd-bucks and upgrading to a Pertronics Ignitor unit ...
    * You're in college, you're flat broke, and you own a 914 in Bowling Green, KY, home of this nation's Corvette assembly plant, with no decent ACVW parts source to speak of.

Did I miss something?

Plan on working through Spring Break (no South Padre Island for you this year) to pay off a rebuilt distributor AND Ignitor module, 'cause at this immediate point in time, you ownin' the wrong car.

He has d-jet.. can't go to 009 unless he uses mueller's solution. Rebuilt oe is probably the best bet if it's not fixable.
