I have flat spots all over my RPM scale, here's whats going on

Dwell = mid 50s....can't get a steady reading just bounces all over the place like from 1 (which means like unavailable or undefined) to 185 to 40 to 68 to 54.6 to others....i think my problem lies there....coil maybe?

Timing....on the dot. Just did it outside.

what's going on here....i have a 74 D-Jet 2.0.....
ws91420
Dwell is the amount of time that the points open. I have watched the previous threads an d have you changed distributors? If the bearings or advance plate is bad it can cause fluctuations in the dwell.. So it may really be your distributor.
bondo
That's very strange. Is your distributor bearing shot? strange lobe wear? broken advance springs? Seems odd that timing can be steady and dwell could vary. You do have points right? Pertronix and the like don't have adjustable dwell.
scotty b
when you set your points, did you have the pickup on the lobe of the shaft? Or on the flat of the shaft? Should have been on the lobe
redshift
Make sure the meter is hooked up NICELY, or you will get bad readings. first thing.

Damn you, Scotty! That clown sucks!

scotty b
You wiecky me changey Miles?
Joe Ricard
Ya know I just don't know what else we can do for you until you bite the bullet and get a new distributor. We have said rebuild it plus al the cautions that go along with it. Offered to sell you good ones for cheap.
YOUR DISTRIBUTOR IS FUCKED UP!!!!!!
redshift
Yeah, that's ALOT BETTER SCOTT THANKS SO MUCH!

take a look at the dist cam lobes. do they have groves in them? do they look the same? use a magnifying glass if you have to. was the car running better before you set the points than it is now?

Scott,

where did you get the picture of my ex MIL from?
scotty b
Is that her in a good mood? Or a bad mood? biggrin.gif
Joe Ricard
IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE ADVANCE PLATE IS NOT MAKING SOLID CONTACT TO GROUND. Yes I'm yelling because nobody listens to me. Actually some people don't listen to anybody just keep bitching that it don't work.
Pull the advance plate apart clean it up and while you are at it adjust the shims in the shaft to take out all the up and down play. If you got side to side play you got big problems requiring rebushing the body. Cheaper to buy new one. Most of the parts are interchangable with 009 like shims and upper shaft section. No advance plate on 009 but that's OK never seen one that can't be cleaned up to work again.

i'm scared...dont knwo what the hell i'm doing...my dad's telling me not to....i dotn knwo what to do.i dont want to kill my car.
scotty b
BUY A NEW ONE THEN you can get a 009 for about $60 I think or a rebuilt o.e. for $?,never bought one always CLEANED MINE!!

what's going on here....

A couple of factors:

    * Your distributor is pretty-much worn out (it happens), causing your points to bounce all over the place, ergo the erratic dwell readings ...
    * You want to stick with those #$%& points instead of plucking down the 65-odd-bucks and upgrading to a Pertronics Ignitor unit ...
    * You're in college, you're flat broke, and you own a 914 in Bowling Green, KY, home of this nation's Corvette assembly plant, with no decent ACVW parts source to speak of.

Did I miss something?

Plan on working through Spring Break (no South Padre Island for you this year) to pay off a rebuilt distributor AND Ignitor module, 'cause at this immediate point in time, you ownin' the wrong car.
scotty b
How does that little blue guy know so much about me? and what is he doing with his lefthand?? unsure.gif

He has d-jet.. can't go to 009 unless he uses mueller's solution. Rebuilt oe is probably the best bet if it's not fixable.
bd1308
actually dude, i'd keep the negative crap to yourself.....i'm not flat broke....i'm making it through. nobody has these things here. dizzy's arent available here....i look at FLAPS....nothing. I'm buying a good 1.7 until i figure out my 2.0 problems....
bd1308
if i brought my dizzy inside and took pictures, could somebody walk me through fixing it?
redshift
take it all apart!

M
scotty b
agree.gif Then reverse the procedure!! biggrin.gif
bd1308
okay guys.....just loosen the 10mm nut thing at the bottom and pull hard?

Really? Maybe you'll just have to SPECIAL ORDER one from AutoZone; click here.

Pick the store nearest you:

660 Hwy 31 By-Pass
Bowling Green, KY 42101

2216 Russellville Road
Bowling Green, KY 42101

Don't forget the Ignitor module ...
bd1308
i think i'm just gonna try to repair mine.....how do i get it out?
scotty b
Yeah just loosen your nut and yank on it a few times and it will cum out.
Take it inside and set it aside until you have time and silence to dissasemble, clean and reassemble it. DO NOT do this over a period of days or you will forget where the pieces go back!!
bd1308
i'm going to do it tonight i think.....i even have a soldiering iron just in case things get hairy!
scotty b
Wasn't this engine running fine when you went ice skating in it? If so I'm not so sure your dist. is bad I think you may have a bad repair to it. confused24.gif

Your scaring the shit out of me!! Just go buy a new one and experiment with this one AFTER the car is running correctly.
bd1308
well actually it ran OKAY before i went 914 ice-skating in it....um and it runs OKAY now (OKAY being defined by missing at certain RPMs and general embarassment runnign the engine having it miss and stuff at idle)

the only thing i have to do is to clean and lube everything right?
scotty b
Have you checked ALL of your vaccum lines? There is one on the 1.7 and I think the 2.0 has it also that hides under the intake runners. it is a 3 way junction that dries out and causes some WIERD running.
bd1308
OH YEAH!!!! i forgot...let me post pictures....the PO messed something up..i need your all's help to straighten things out
ws91420
Do you have an Auto Zone nearby ? Go there and order one. If not go to their website and order a dizzy. It is rebuilt and has the trigger points for the FI. Yes I used to work for them but it was a great price and no core charge.
bd1308
done deal.....i'll do that like tonite.wait they are closed. i'll do that like monday.

Augh, I just got that. oof.
SLITS
Before you go yanking.....

Roll the engine up to TDC or some mark that you time off thru the hole.

Take chal, paint marker..anything that will stay and make a mark on the case and dizzy housing directly in line with the direction the rotor is pointing.

That way, when you get thru putzing with it, you can put it back in with the same orientation that you took it out.
bondo
Also, don't take out the gear or the washer may fall into the case... Then you'll be hurting. It's aslo a good idea to vacuum around the dizzy before removing it, so leaves and pine needles don't end up in your engine. smile.gif
Cap'n Krusty
Check the point plate ground wire! I wouldn't even THINK of buying a FLAPS reman unit, BTW. They're junk in every way. Always! They cannot be rebuilt for the price they sell 'em for! The Cap'n
bd1308
alright....roll the engine to TDC....got it. I am going to rebuild it over this weekend i think. I'll have my apple with me while i do it, so when i mess it up i can show you all how bad.
rhodyguy
being an 009 fool, any chance his f.i. trigger points are acting up?

I'm scared now. Britt intends to buy my 1.7 if'n he can't fix a simple distributor problem howz he going to keep a different engine running?
Britt another missing problem I have dicovered with my current enf=gine was crappy plug wires. Solid core that are screwed into the phenolic adapter at the plug end. I was getting arcing and then burning out of the connection and then a miss developed.
I made up a new set with regular American connectors and put tin seals on the boots. Fit snug and never had no more problems.
rhaas
you can get a replacement for about 50 bucks from partsamerica.com. will ship in 1 day. This is what I would reccommend, your distributer is f'ed up!!
bd1308
the reason for the 1.7 is becuase my 2.0 heads are shot and i need time to fix it....which i dont have. replaced the plug wires just a month or two ago--solved most of my problems IMHO. I think taking the dizzy apart will fix things around here. again the reason for replacing the 2.0 with a 1.7 is so i can work on the heads (get them sent off and fixed).......dont be scared Joe.
