So there was a recent thread where there was serious 'take the rocker covers off and check your longs' finger wagging going on.... so I did...
Background: I got the car 8/2012, from Cali, a Palm Springs car its whole life. The car had/has very little rust, and is very original. I'm fairly certain that the covers have never been off in the life of the car.... this is what I found: Drivers Side: This is the road tar and sand and whatever was caked in there! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) Passenger Side: So the rivet holes on the passenger side sill are rusty, and I'll clean those up and primer/paint. Overall the longs look great, and I'm happy to see them so clean and rust free. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) |

I had three 914s that I bought in that condition when I lived in New York.
Of course they were brand new 1971-73. They sure rusted quickly.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) |

Those look good.
I did the same last year...like going to a doctor's appointment that you have been putting off for a while. Ten pounds of sand, dirt a crap came out. POR'd the valance insides and resprayed the valances on the outside with 3M undercoating and then a top coat of clear lacquer. replaced the screws underneath with S/S metric cap screws instead of the cheese heads. I just re-riveted the top in place since the sheet metal is thin there. They are easy to drill out. |

That looks very much like the longs on my car! Mine came from Pasadena but was bought new at Bob Smith Porsche in Hollywood. It took me a couple of years to take my rockers off as well....not quite sure why but I just put it off.

My vote is keep it original if you can. Fix rust but try to retain as much original paint as possible. I suspect the thread you saw on taking the longs off was related to my car.
Looks like you have great car. Congrats. Would love to see more pics. Lots of them. |

Those longs look great!
Consider coating with cavity wax before putting the rockers back on |

Damn you guys with California cars....
When I took my covers off, the pile of debris that fell out WAS the longs... I vote for just touching up the rusty spots... its only original once.. |

That area in front of the Jack post is designed in such a way that dirt from the rear tire can get in there from above, but there is no place for it to fall out, so it packs in there.
I replace the bottom screws with two things Longer screws and 3/8 inch thick rubber spacers. This opens up the bottom of the cover and pulls it away form the long. You cannot tell the difference visually. Now, once done this way, you can take a hose and fire it in there from the front and the back and clean out the rockers allowing everything to go out the bottom. Obviously you will want to touch up that paint, but this is a good long term cure. For the other poster, unless he is magic, he also has dirt, rust, and pealing paint in that exact same area, it's in every car, no matter location or mileage unless is was never driven. Thanks for posting, and looks like you have a fine example, keep her clean. Rich |

Those longs look great! Consider coating with cavity wax before putting the rockers back on Ok dumb question what is cavity wax? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) I think there may be more than one kind... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . Glenn..? Hey good idea on the modification Rich. My car was a from California too Steve, so I of course assumed there would be nothing at all under the rockers. Almost fell over when I took them off and about 5 lbs of dirt fell out. How did you like the first couple of minutes of frantic cleaning followed by relief when you found the un-rusted painted long under all that? Man what a roller coaster. |

Lots of them. yes, I was your thread...this link shows the pictures from the seller I bought the car from, its an unvarnished look at the condition I received the car in. https://www.flickr.com/photos/31665730@N07/...57628256393873/ That area in front of the Jack post is designed in such a way that dirt from the rear tire can get in there from above, but there is no place for it to fall out, so it packs in there. I was not expecting that brick of debris when I took the driver side cover off. I was also not expecting to wipe them off and see pristine Light Ivory painted longs either.!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) The passenger side long had some motor oil on it, there back by the jack post, and given the state of the engine and tranny, their was some pretty regular leaking going on in the past. Actually think that helped the passenger side. It will probably be a week before I re-install the covers, so I can get them cleaned up and touched up as suggested. The car photographs well, but up close the original paint (at least on the outer surfaces) is pretty faded/chipped/scratched/etc... The trunks and now the longs look much better. It would be awhile before any paint job happened, and I'll still addressing the rust as I go along. |

Man, that dirt was all layered in like sediment. I wonder if you could do some soil analysis and carbon dating and map out where all the car has been?
