Fuel Tank Fitting, Which is which? Options

I wasn't paying attention when I pulled my tank to put in the SS lines and need to know which fitting is feed and which is return. Also, is the return line under the same pressure as the feed?

The one with the sock is feed. That's under no pressure, as it's before the fuel pump. (well, it's under the pressure of gravity from the fuel above it) The return is under more pressure but not much because it's after the regulator. The only high pressure part of the fuel system is everything between the fuel pump and the regulator.

I had to pull my tank last summer and dealt with everthing you are dealing with now. How to clean the tank, test the sender, which line was which.

let me jump ahead of you:
the small washers that go on the fittings at the bottom of the tank, are NLA from Porsche. You definetly need them otherwise..... leak city. I had to comb the local porsche shops and basically dig through some old boxes to find a suitable replacement. I think some other folks here managed to find some copper crush washers at their local hardware store that worked as well.

The rearward hole/fitting is feed, the forward is return. (I had to look at a spare tank to make sure.)

funny, mine didn't have any either. But when I put everything back together....leak city. So I got to remove the tank twice. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)

after that, someone sent me this parts diagram showing the washers.

What are they made of. I took a closer look at mine and found that they have a small gasket but nothing resembling a crush washer.

I think the factory ones were made of fiber or some such. Maybe you can re-use them. Since you took your tank to a radiator shop, they might have something as well.

I found my notes from when I spoke with the Porsche dealer. He gave me the deminsions for the washers:

big one: 16mm outside dia. / 10mm inside dia.

smaller one: 16mm outside dia. / 8mm inside dia.

So how did everyone clean their tanks?

I have the 911 tank out and it needs to be cleaned. I used some Zep metal cleaner from the local big box hardware store on my teener tank. Are there any better solutions out there?

I ran into this problem with my 914/6, can't remember whether it was the flow or return line, but I was able to use a beetle nut (I stripped mine), washer and screen on mine without any problems . Any bug shop, and maybe even your flaps should be able to score the whole assembly. No leaks.

I got the fiber washers from Zims out in Bedford, Tx
last summer.
They only have one of the two sizes but you can use a dremel
tool to make one into the other one.

i got some washers at the local hardware store. just took the fitting in and told them it was for a fuel tank. they are some type of fiber and cost about $0.50 for both.

i know POR-15 has a fuel tank restoration kit. i was just lazy and took mine to the radiator shop and had them sand blast the whole thing and do the renu process. then they powder coated the outside gloss black.

When I pulled my tank, it was a gallon jug, with a piece of garden hose running through the passenger compartment.

Still is.
