So am I. My plan is to use a modern GM 300 amp Hairpin style computer controller alternator and put it low on the right where the distributor was, but I am not sure if it will clear the firewall or not.

Attached Image

I am going to run it from the same serpentine belt as the fan, so if the belt breaks, I get a generator light that tells me before the engine overheats.

The alternator will be controlled by the MS3Pro ECU to only put out the amperage needed. But I have to have the amperage to run the Electric AC compressor, so I have to go with something stout.

I had bought a supercharger that went into the same space as your alternator but there was no way to fit it in the 914. There is a bump out for the fan but then the metal moves back to the engine.

I hope you are wrong, but if not, then I will add a dimple for the alternator pulley.

Clay, doesn't your red car have a GPS speedometer? I remember when I was down there for that HAAG Engineering class we went for a ride
. I am going to need one for the Alien. Or and electronic one.

Yes, It uses a 911 Electronic speedometer with an aftermarket GPS sender setup.

It uses an Auto Meter 5289 GPS module. I mounted the receiver puck on the top center of the windshield hoop.

Here is the thread from me testing and installing it.

Hope that helps.

With the change to the MS3Pro and the addition of traction control, I am adding wheel speed sensors to all four wheels. So I am able to drive the speedo off the MS3 pro's speed output. So I am adding that ability to the wiring harness. At first I will probably just leave it the way it is until I get the engine tuning done.

Would this flat alternator belt work on a 911? I have the high output alternator with standard V-belt and was wondering if the flat belt with tensioner would be better.

Jerry,

Yes, the serpentine belt conversion will work with the high output alternator. Clewett engineering even makes an underdrive belt kit to increase the fan/alternator speed.

Here's the link to their page: https://www.clewett.com/index.php?main_page...ex&cPath=60

Clewett's kits were designed for the 911, and the tensioner had to be slightly modified for use with a 914. I know there was a recent thread on it, but I don't have it handy. The tensioner attaches to the 911 motor mount on a part that is not present in the 914 motor mount. Clewett redesigned the tensioner, and I have not seen the new design, so that may not be true any more.

I hope that helps.

Clay - you have things a bit backwards. The clewett underdrive kit slows down the fan and alternator to reduce hp loss at higher rpm’s.

You're right. I just reread the Clewett page. It does slow down the fan. They even provide a link that shows how to make the alternator charge with the slower speed fan.

I just realized we don't have a "derp" emoji.

Hey Clay! I met you at Rennsport we were talking around #40! Anyways your motor looks real awesome, exciting to see your progress on this.

One thing to keep in mind, I just went thru this, the rear trunk/engine firewall bumps up to the cab after that engine sheet metal. So when I did my EFI conversion I had to pull out the trunk torsion bars to get more room for the EFI air filter. Just wanted to make sure were aware there is not a ton of height available on the rear of the motor due to the rear trunk lid, unless you are doing more cutting. You're probably already thinking about that...

I pulled the torsion bars when I put the 964 motor in the car, and ran it like that for years.

I have something else in mind for it. Stay tuned. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
