I was a little rough on Beetles in my youth..
At 17, shortly before going to College, a former HS classmate was tripping and pulled out right out in front of me when I was going 45. I spun a 63 bug without rolling it (trying to loose speed) and hit his Opel at a 45 degree head on. Pushed his engine into the passengers seat and threw one of his wheels down the road. No seat belts in that bug- too early. They pulled me from the bug -dead. Fortunately there were 2 medical corpsmen on the scene from the base and they revived me. So, I've been to the other side and seen it. The second bug was the 1965 replacement car. I was driving on a 5 lane road- 2 lanes each direction and a center turn lane. A car was in the right lane with the right turn signal on and was braking at every driveway. I pulled in the left lane, got close to them and the idiot decided to do a "U" turn from the far right lane with the right blinker on. I remember hitting the side of the drivers side trunk on that big old piece of Detroit iron. Bet I went halfway through it while hanging in my seatbelts. Ended up being drunk highschoolers in a car fulla beer. I always wear seatbelts now after those experiences. Ken |

Remember the whole drama about the Suzuki Samuria flipping over like a rolling paper in the hands of a Deadhead? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smoke.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/w00t.gif) It was true. Found out 1st hand driving home one winters evening on a country road. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

Killed:
1970 Sunroof Beetle (Sr Year of HS - my fault) 1974 Std Beetle (in college - blue hair's fault) Killed and rebuilt: 1984 Sunroof GTI (just after college - Mustang owner's fault) Severly Wounded: 1997 Mustang Cobra (hit in a parking lot as I watched) Insurance co. fixed it for me. Undamaged: 1973 Karmann Ghia Vert. (Jr year of HS - my fault) Spun it on two different occasions. 2nd required a tow back onto the road from a friendly guy with a backhoe and a chain. He just shook his head and mumbled under his breath alot. Drove home both times. R |

First and worst was about 5 months after getting my license in highschool. 1980 VW Rabbit full of friends, decided to make a last minute turn into the McDonalds parking lot from the second lane out. Didn't see the Volvo in the other lane that was definitely speeding. Ended up being somebody from my highchool. Nobody hurt but the car should have been totaled, insurance company fixed it.
A couple of rear enders on the icy roads of winter in Anchorage until I figured out to leave a little distance when it is slick out. Nothing since highschool, guess I got it out of my system, not that there hasn't been any close calls. |

This wasn't my fault, but it happened not that long ago and I was pretty tweaked about it:
Picked up my new 2004 Monte Carlo SS on 12/31/04. The very next day I went to play in a poker tournament. Won 700 bucks and was feeling pretty good about the night. I was helping my buddy clean up when another friend came strolling back in and said he knocked off my sideview mirror and scraped all down my passenger side with his pickup. I thought he was kidding at first until I saw the look on his face... The car had 19 miles on it - only 5 miles from me. Cost my buddy $2100 to repair the damage. Attached image(s) ![]() |

Lady turned left in front of me, I was doing 45. Her vehicle was higher than mine, it never touched my bumper. Broke the engine mounts and dented the firewall with the rear exhaust manifold. That airbag hurts...
This was my father-in-laws car that he let me borrow too... Uuughgh... (IMG:http://www.qtm.net/~persot/spirit/Spirit_1.JPG) Accident happened before it started snowing, so I wasn't speeding... (or too fast for conditions...) (IMG:http://www.qtm.net/~persot/spirit/Spirit_2.JPG) Found out she had no insurance and falsified her drivers liscense. 1.5 years later we are still trying to find her to sue her... Dumb bitch... lets see, And sorry this post is long.
From a very young age I started mangling things and uh, myself........ Age 3 Metropolitan Nash, turn the key, pull the pull starter (dad left it in first) off it chugged down the driveway until CRASH, parents looked outside the kitchen window to see me standing on the drivers seat balling (I was three) after I ran into the back of my dads 60 356 B Cabriolet, which I still own to this day. Age 5, Well I wasn't driving this time, but I was the cause. We had a Pontiac we called the blue whale cuse it was F___ing huge. My sister ran of the shoulder and wedged it into a fire hydrant, while trying to get me to sit down, I smacked the windscreen with my noodle, and was'nt right for a couple weeks. Age 8-12 Various motocross accidents but only one major incident. Trying to kick start my dads B50SS BSA and I let go of the compression release just a bit early, She spit me over the bars onto my head (again)and I was out for about 4 hours, woke up in the hospital thinking I was riding the damn thing when it happened. Age 13 One of the big ones, While wheeling at a demonstration for Yamaha learn to ride, I wheeled over backwards on a TY80 and lost copious amounts of skin. It is the largest organ you know. Age 14 During national BMX race, tripled what everyone else was single/doubling, it was much faster, I only did it once in practice, because I did not want to give up the secret for the race, won two qualifyers, got to the main, and what'll you know, everyone had the same idea, Broke my tail bone. I know it sounds lame, but it hurt like a M f er. Age 16 VW Bug, turning left and a guy was trying to pass me from behind, got me right in the door, claimed the accident was my fault, and my insurance company paid, so I got it in the back door without any lube if you know what I mean. Thats okay, Every 1-3 months I would throw two bricks through the windows at his shop (fish market) lost his insurance. Hey, I was 16, and stupid. Age 16 Terra Haute Indiana, dirt flat track race motorcycle. Through the fench on my flat track bike, broken clave, stiches, broken fingers, broken nose (many to come) and again another concussion, pattern forming here. Age 18, 73 914 2.0 Two tone rust and lime green shitty paint, with a blue front fender, used to love drifting the thing through this set of esses, no really , I'm not putting you on, I was the original drifter, LOL. anyway, lost it on the second right hander on wyandotte street (just down the street from my girlfriends)and 54th in Kansas City, MO. Told the cops I swerved to miss a dog, sorry, did'nt buy it, Wreckless/ driving to endanger etc... 914 caught on fire when the battery tray came off of the wall (remember the two tone rust) and the positive post touched one of the weber carbs. Nice hot two liter engine I built. burned so well, that the only thing left was the gear sets because the trans caught on fire. Oh, no injuries except my pride , and uh wallet. Age 19 XL350 Honda,(riding a motorcycle now because I could'nt afford anything else) Stupid broad pulled out in front of me and I did the superman over the bed of her truck, she was pregnant and they sent two sets of EMT's, she went into labor and I went for dermabraid, not fun, more road rash. Man her husband was an A--Hole. Thought it was my fault she had the accident. Their kid was fine, actually saw him in the neighborhood for the next couple years. Age 23 Southwick National 125 Pro race, knocked down in the first turn, foot caught in the rear wheel of another bike, broken toes right foot, double pulled hamstrings left and right. Age 25 Road racing, lost the rear end while exiting turn 10 at Loudon NH, broken ankle and of course another concussion. Oh, and had nothing else to drive home in but a 944 Turbo and my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) could'nt drive a stick, Still can't. So after the hospital says it isn't broken I drive home and everytime I step on the clutch pedal my ankle clicks, Surgically repaired two days following the crash. Plenty of sympathy cards to play for the next couple years with the girlfriend and her friends. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/happy11.gif) Age 31 Daytona International Speedway, Bike Week, Roadracing, lost the nose into turn 1 at about 120MPH, Broken hand, leg, ribs. Hand never did heal, but finally got some of that titanium (leg) all the guys at the track had been talking about. Age 33 Daytona again, this time in the team race hauler, Some stupid woman stopped for a green light, me and 4 other cars hit her, no injuries. But it did not help I had been up for 37 hours straight. Since then it has been smooth sailing. No tickets, no accidents, no broken anything. Except for the broken nose in Hockey last year, but thats another story. Erik Madsen |

First:
I drove my '72 Beetle into a parking spot and failed to notice as I did that the reason no one was parking there was the telephone pole in the middle of that spot. My fault but hey! I was 20... Lost control of my 240Z and slid into a guard rail in heavy rain. My fault. Too fast for the conditions. Got hit from behind in my 240Z by a guy fuchin' around road raged in a Pontiac Trans Am. I was the lucky one. He spun me with an unintended Pitt Manuever but punted the lady in the Camry next to me off into the rice fields next to the freeway. I spun 4 times and wound up facing traffic on the inside shoulder without hitting anything. He impacted my car twice. Once at the right rear taillight and bumper, and once at the right front fender reversing the direction of his Pitt spin. The Camry lady was airlifted to a Trauma Center. Not my fault. Backed out of my garage with the Boxster and felt a mild crunch. Fuch! Rubbed the right rear against the MGB. Owned the MGB for 2 years and drove it 20 miles. Any of you who have owned British cars will know why. I called it the driveway plug. Oh, and the yellow buffed right out. Down in Napa there is a terrific road called the Oakville Grade. Curvy, mountainous, and full of deer. I avoided the 3 deer but just bumped a tree right up against the shoulder. 7 freakin' thousand dollars in damage! Lots of shittage just under the bumper on the Boxster. My fault, Bambi has a right to occupy any space she wishes. |

98 BMW 323is. Coming home from a weekend at a lodge in the woods the weekend before Thanksgiving 5 years ago. Fully loaded Peterbuilt coming the other way on the highway. Now, there was road construction going on, so there were cement jersey barricades left, center, and right.
Peterbuilt was coming up on a traffic backup and tried to slow/stop. Hit a slippery area and couldn't, lost control, came through the jersey barricades in the center, and nailed me head on. Would have gone completely over me if a 12 foot section of barricade wasn't trapped under his bumper in from of his tires. Loved that car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) |

Never been in an accident, never had a speeding ticket. The only time I was pulled over was for a missing front plate and music was too loud coming from the car. |

Only 2 wrecks for me.
1. I was sitting still on an overpass in the left turn lane in my 914 (Yes, the same one I still drive today) and a drunk in a 3/4 Ton Ford pickup decided that my 914 was a hole he could turn into. He drove OVER the back end of the car. Left a perfect impression of his bumper. The insurance totalled the car. I got the money, and he lost his insurance and license. 2. I was sitting still waiting to turn left in my 914 when an elderly man in a 3/4 Ton Ford pickup decided halfway through his right turn that he really didn't want to turn right. So he hit me in the driver's door and left front fender. He lost his license, and I got a settlement. I now have a unnatural fear of Ford Pickups.......... |

Clay if you don't stop or make any turns you should be ok.
1958 a gargage truck ran a stop sign in front of me on a sears moped, I only hit him going about 20 not to bad, stiil used the moped another year. 1959 i was 15, a lady and I met in a intersection in town that had some high hedges and we didn't see each other, no stop signs. Knocked the front end off my 39 chevy. Got another complete front end for 15.00 and one weekend of labor, it was also black like my car. 1962 I was driving a borrowed nice 55 ford pickup to chase some bearings for the 270 six, it was in the 39 at the time with a paxton super charger off of a stude, and a guy came up a hill on the wrong side of the road and I couldn't swerve to the right because of construction and tboned him off the shoulder after he realized he was in the wrong place and swerved back directly in front of me. He was going maybe 50 and I was going maybe 50. He and his family were in a 57 plymouth 4 door, the truck hit him in the left ear. He died with pneumonia about two weeks later. The front seat got pushed out the passenger side about 2 feet and his pregnant wife had a miscarrige and one little boy went out the back window and got a broken leg the other one who was on the non impact side I think was ok. 10 or 15 years later the lawsuits finally got settled. 1965 tried to outrun a cop in college late at night on the same road I had used before, I had some homeboys with me the first time. The second time I had a little to much beer and was going a little faster and a telephone pole got the right side and stopped me. It was a nice little 46 chevy coupe with caddy firemist red laquer and rolled pans with the 270-6, 4 barrel with a muncy 4 spd. fenton headers, milled head, melling cam and a homemade dual point dist, It would turn 6k with a lightened flywheel and 390 merc. rearend. It would get 4th gear rubber barely. Caved the passengers door into about the center of the red 63 corvair bucket seat. 1967 after the 46 chevy I got a 58 bug to use in college. after quitting college I rear ended a guy driving a soldiers wife around that stopped in the rain on a exit ramp to see if anyone was coming and I was looking back to see if anyone was coming. The bug didn't have a front bumper and went under a nice 63 impala. The impala got buckeled under the roof on each side. I hit the windshield and got about 100 stitches in my face and serious surgery on my left eye to remove glass after the eye had already healed over. I still have the bug, it's got a 64 front end and is now a pickup. Soon to get a suby, after the 914, if I live long enough. 1969, My first 69 jade green mach 1 about 5k miles on it, didn't make a rt turn at about 130 drag racing and ran out of road, rolled it 4 times. I think it would have made it but the left rear wheel dug into the soft dirt. Still have the wheels on a bug. 1971 got a high speed wobble about 90 on a 350 kawasaki street scrambler (two cycle 42 hp 329 lbs.) I found out later that if you just lay down on the tank the wobble goes away. Took a few beers to try it the first time. Lost a lot of forearm skin and a sprained ankle and wrist. Just rolled down the middle of the highway. Didn't even loose my sun glasses they were wedged in my helmet I guess. The worst part was cleaning the rash. Just sold the bike to a friend last year. 1981 I was doing a little better. 63 j200 jeep truck with a sbc, going too fast and over corrected on a curve and hit a tree with the left front wheel, broke the steering arm off the right front wheel. Didn't see the wheels were both turned out a lot (it was about 2 am) and tore the tranny up trying to get out off real high grass to asses the damage. The truck didn't like it when I put it in 4wd and the front axle was bound up. Since then I've had three v65 hondas (about 130 hp) and did ok. I got a 1200 sportster in 96 and spent about 4k trying to make it perform like the hondas. Really didn't ride it a lot but it ran pretty good. At 7k in 2nd it will get the front wheel up in third. Anyway in 2005 I wasn't paying attention and on a poker run with my buddies they were only going about 65 and I didn't notice (might have been napping they were going so slow, at least thats what I tell them) some black loose asphalt from a new asplalt driveway coming out onto the pavement on a curve and slid off the road. I don't remember the impact. When I woke up my glasses were off and one lens popped out which someone found. My fullface helmet was broke in three places and my left hand didn't work. It's called a brachiel plexus I think. The emer.room in a small town hospital xrayed me and said everything was ok and sent me home. This was memorial day weekend saturday. On tuesday the xray tech. from the hospital called and asked me how I was doing and I said that I had had a lot of wrecks but this one hurt the worst. All the pain was inbetween my shoulderblades. She said I had 5 broke ribs and a cracked vertibrae and wanted to do a mri on my neck. I got my son who was home from college to take me back over there to get the mri but it didn't show any new damage. It took about a month for my head to clear. I couldn't hear as well and I even got a new eyeglass perscription because my eyes wouldn't focus. But my eyes did get ok. My left hand never got any grip back and the thumb doesn't rotate very good. I can hold a drink or the phone but it is really hard to tie shoes or button shirts. When I was young I didn't expect to make 21, then 30, then 40 but the lord likes me and considering the past if I had known I was going to make it this long I would have taken better care of me. |

First 72 914 1.7. Lady pulled out in front of me with a station wagan and I t-boned her at my 30mph after skidding from 55 mph. The front spare tire saved my ass, but I bit the steering wheel and put my bottom teeth through my lower lip. bought the car back from insurance and bought another 73. Once the 72 was stripped I put the parts in a barn that later burned to the ground. Wish I had those parts today! CARR914 neds to stay off the road! Good gosh!

Nice revival of a three year old thread....
#1 Jeep CJ-7. 16 years old and only been driving a few months, so I really didn't know how to drive. Someone pulled out in front of me. I managed to miss them, but lost control and ran into a creek. Bent bumper and cracked windshield. #2 1973 914 2.0. My first 914. In college and clearly invincible in my own mind. A specific curve on the way home was calling to me. Each time I would drive that section of road, I would go faster and faster. Apparently around 100 MPH was the max. Drop throttle oversteer, stupidity and lack of driving skill (at that time) was the real cause. Car was completely totaled and all I had was some bruises. When rescue squad showed up (after police was already there) they casually walked up (thinking I was a spectator) and ask how many pieces the driver was in. I told them one. #3 1980's Chevy Monte Carlo. Senior in college this time. Traffic in front of my stopped suddenly. I almost came to a halt, but ended up breaking tail light out of car in front of me. Might have been easier to explain to my dad if I hadn't also received a speeding ticket that morning as well. It was a fun dinner that evening. #4 2000 Honda Odyssey. After 10+ years of no issues, man pulls out of a parking lot right into the side of me. Damages rear wheel and suspension. Claims he didn’t see me. #5 2000 Honda Odyssey. A few years later, elderly man pulls out of parking lot into heavy traffic and heads right for me with the entire family in the car. I steer away and brake, but he keeps coming at me like a heat seeking missle. Says he didn't see me. Beginning to wonder why people can’t see the van as it pretty big. I have lost count of the minor stuff like people backing into me while stopped in a parking lot. |

Only the big ones here the minor opps like people backing into my parked car have been omitted:
#1. Rode my '71 Norton Commando thru a gated fence on base at Mayport Fl. #2. Fell asleep at the wheel in my '76 Corvette, woke up in the hospital with a concusion, broken nose, and lots of strained muscles. I bounced off the Jersey Barrier crossed two lanes of traffic on I10 and then was thrown from the car as it rolled. An 18 wheeler slid thru the wreck while some guy was helping to drag me out of the drainage ditch. Fl state police were finding parts of my car for almost a mile. #3. Hit by a drunk driver on the way to a car show in Washington D.C. with my 1968 Mustang. Totaled by the moron driving a used Benz from the used car lot he worked at, he hit us from behind and didnt have any lights on at 1 in the morning. Tore up my knees as I slid up under the dash and my (then) wife went thru the windshield suffering some cuts and a miscarriage. To add insult to injury I had just finished the resto on the Mustang, and it was stolen from the garage it was towed to after the accident. #4. My Fiero vs. Cutlass Supreme. Cutlass driver turned left in front of me at an intersection where no turns are allowed. I hit the side of his car so hard the Fiero came off the ground and did a 180 and landed behind him. Pushed in the rear quarter on the cutlass so far that it formed itself around the rear frame rail. Cutlass was able to drive away, though not far as I bent his frame and the Fiero was toast. Those are the biggies, I've had several close calls in Porsches but have always been able to regain control and not hurt anyone or anything other then needing a change of shorts. After #1 I haven't been back on a bike in over 20 years. |
