Where can I find information on using hydraulic lifters? Is there anyone out there that has done a build using hydraulic lifters? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Would like to hear of all the pros and cons.

The pro is they suck.
The con is they really suck donkey balls.

If you can't adjust your valves, or pay a wrench to do it for you, then the 914 is the wrong car for you.

Do a search. The topic has been discussed extensively. I have them, don't mind them, but if I was rebuilding an engine I wouldn't go that route.

The demand for these lifters in a T4 application is too small for the development costs.
A one-off could be done if one was to put their mind to it,essentially a rote exercise.
Adapting the chevy,or similar parts,a decent result could be had.
None of this is cheep,building a T4 good to 8500 on pushrods.
A fully scavenged dry sump will be necessary.
Things will break on the path to that kind of performance.
Reduction of friction and mass,both costly pursuits,testing,analyzing and redesign.
Sure,it can be done,as an entire replacement of the valvetrain.
The rods titanium,like the canted intake valves,LN cylinders,billet heads,and on and on.

For a 6500rpm engine of course,the costs are commensurately reduced,like,you won't need the
exotic rods,steel Carrillos will happily do it all day.
A T4 that will spin to 8.5K and more is the wish list carte blanche build,for sure a lot of fun.
A set of feeler gauges and a half hour every 5000km seems a simpler way to big revs.
The power desire curve would be more easily climbed with a larger engine,a Corvair!
The 1956 designed engine came with hydraulic lifters utilizing the factory stamped,heat-treated,ground and polished rocker arms.
Stuffing all those goodies into the six,a momentary satisfaction would result,whetting the taste for speed.

Thanks for the info guys. After viewing the information on this subject it sounds like a bad idea not to mention the cost. Valve adjustments sound a whole lot easier.

If one cannot to pay for or do a valve job, a motor swap isn't in the books for them I'd say (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Whatever happened to the overhead cam head project I think a group in Europe was working on years ago? Did they ever finish the prototypes?

I can adjust my valves, that is not a problem. I just wanted to know if there was any performance, or perhaps reliability factors to consider that would make me want to try hydraulic lifters. After asking around it does not sound like a very good idea (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif) . I just brought home a new project car that I am considering an engine swap (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Chevy V8.

No, but there is the annoying as (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) factor of having them bleed out and sometimes being reluctant to pump up again if you let the car sit for more than a week.

When i was younger, much less mechanically inclined, and using my 914 as my daily driver I paid a shop to build a motor with them. It was a good motor, I beat the hell out of it for close to 15 years never having pulled the valve covers once. It still runs great but it is now sitting on a dolly in my garage unused for all the reasons i would never make the choice to put hydro lifters in a 914 again.
