Thanks - I’m enjoying the process. Hopefully the cold weather holds on for a while so I can stay in the garage.

As always, I’m waiting on parts. So, I decided to assemble the trailing arms. First, the new Elephant pivot shafts and bushings purchased a long time ago are in place.

The bottom section of the grill is getting close. Needs welding and the final trim.

Welded done. Need to clean it up and trim it to the final shape.

How's the oil cooler install going?

Warm weather pushed me outdoors for several days - had to trim trees and plant a few more.

Anyway, here’s a pic of the grill. Just need to attach the mesh to the frame and paint it.

Also, I’m still waiting on Elephant Racing to send me some hose to complete the fit up of the oil lines to cooler connections. After I get the hose, I’ll cut them to length and orient the connections correctly before sending them back to elephant for crimping ( I can’t find anyone near me to crimp them).

Worked on the trailing arms a little last evening. Frozen bearings made the install super easy. Also, mounted the adapters for Boxster calipers.

Hopefully there isn’t anyone as stupid as me out there - but - FYI

I had hardware replated for my restoration, but I’ve been very careful to use new bolts on everything so far; until today.

I was assembling the 911 e-brakes on the trailing arms, and realized I had used all of the new bolts I had. So, I started thinking about using the replated bolts - first mistake. Then I used them on the bearing retainer plate - second mistake. Then, upon torquing them one broke at very low torque - Clear sign of my stupidity.

Anyway, as you know, the replated parts can become brittle due to hydrogen embrittlement resulting from the plating process if not properly post treated.

So, to anyone considering using replated bolts on anything that needs to hold, don’t think about it - no, stop thinking - just get new bolts.

Go to a local hydraulic shop. We do this all the time when we need custom hoses done.

I don’t agree with your statement about replated hardware. I have had a ton of hardware replated without any issues. I actually put a torque wrench on a bunch of new and replated hardware and without fail, the used/replated hardware was as strong and typically outlasted the new stuff. That’s not to say that every shop is plating it correctly but all the hardware I have has been fine. Even replated springs seem to be fine.

I would like to use a local shop, but they say they can’t since they work with Gates. Maybe Gates owns the equipment. I live a long way from everything, so after talking with several shops, I gave up.

I know I’m probably extreme on the replated bolts. I come from an Aerospace background, so it’s in my blood, and having a failure in the first few I used didn’t help matters. I agree that replated bolts can be used when they are properly processed.

It’s really common that restoration shops use replated hardware (not nuts) because the Porsche hardware came from specific manufacturers and for those concourse resto’s, it’s definitely preferred. I’m not sure how the shop I use handles their plating but its worked out so far. It would be interesting to find out what went wrong on the bolts you used.

I’d love to send the bolts to my old employer’s lab to get a firm answer on whether they have been processed correctly, but that’s not a possibility unfortunately. I know it would have been fine if treated correctly, but I’m not going to risk it with the remaining bolts. It’s also possible that the bolt already had a fracture for some reason.

You’re definitely correct with restoration shops wanting original fasteners. Maybe they have the processor provide a certification of conformance.

High strength steel parts are subject to hydrogen embrittlement after acid exposure or after plating. Typically hardware is cleaned and then acid “pickled” before plating

A relatively simple heat treatment process is done to drive out the hydrogen post plating, from memory it is 375 degrees F for an hour or so but it should be done within 1-3 after plating.

Common aerospace processing but may not be done by just any plating shop and less likely if you don’t ask for it.

Applies to hi strength steel only but I would say that would include grade 8 bolts or better. Best to just do it as a general practice - not difficult and should add little to the cost.

The oil hose and fittings from Elephant Racing arrived this morning. I’m using 30mm to connect the hard lines, and AN16 at the cooler connection.

One note that may be of interest to some: the green stripe hose can be bent to about a 5” radius - measured at the OD.

The 914-6 emblem arrived today. Not perfect, but it’s a good reproduction.
