any particular sizing or things to look for in a wastegate?

I do know that cockpit adjustable units should be avoided to prevent the urge to crank up the boost "just one more psi, what can it hurt???" LOL

the turbo that I don't have for the project I don't plan on attempting, has no internal wastegate

Are you planning on turbo'ing this long-stroke big engine, or something smaller?

1st will be the short stroke engine (69mm???) (internally stock 1.8)

...depending on how I like a turbo 914 will be a factor in whether or not I also turbo my 78 stroke motor.....
according to Jake, the cam I have picked out will work fine with a low boost turbo application....I went with 94mm Nickies so those will help with the cooling, but I will still be limited to boost due to the sealing issues....

QUOTE
Wow, I never see anything that shiny at my pick-a-part.
I bet that wastegate cost more than my entire first turbo project

$100 brand new*, hard to pass it up considering a used W/G would have been in the $35 or more range

*guy had it listed as a specific car model wastegate for a vehicle that did not come stock with a turbo, I think it scared some people from bidding....

QUOTE

still undecided on the mounting of the turbo, if I mount it high, no extra pump needed.....if low, then I'll go with the electric pump, not too motivated to pull the motor just to install a brand new stock location oil pump (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif)

Ok I don't even want to get involved in this discussion because after all it is impossible... but what the hell. I was think along these lines for a car that has stock sized tires and is running a fresh but stock 2.0. It does seem like a good combo for a small tire/weakish transaxle (I know it can handle some hp I am just thinking bang vs. buck) once the boost comes on you on rolling pretty good anyway... As for location are you thinking the dead space on the passenger side above the axle? It would make it easier to mount an intercooler in the rear trunk and feed it through a 930 type tail (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) Nevermind you can't turbo a 914 anyway.

of the few 914-turbos that don't exist (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif), the turbo itself has been placed in the following locations with great results:

engine compartment, sitting above the motor,

on passanger side up near the bellhousing (opp. side of starter),

all the way back near the side of the transmission mounting ears....

all of them have worked, no issues with major turbo lag or any of that stuff as long as turbo size is taken care of....

there are Chevy V8's running stock transmissions and "little" 205 sized tires with no problems..most turbo /4's are putting out way less hp/tq so it should be no big deal....even when the boost does come on, it's not like it's going to be an instant 75hp increase that going to shock the drivetrain...

Do some searches here for member airsix. He has a 1.7 with a super-cheap turbo setup on it.

The 914 gearbox really isn't THAT weak. A turbo'd 914 engine is certainly not going to make enough torque to cause any problems unless you went completely insane on it. Figure well under 200ft/lbs, which is quite a bit less than the typical SBC is putting out. I know from personal experience that 150ft/lbs is enough to make the stock 1st gear superfluous, and is quite enough to embarrass the average Mustang GT when employed in a 914.

My thoughts exactly. The turbo thing more like enforces what I enjoy about driving this car, I have never driven a V8 914 but I would be leary of one with even a 300hp just because of traction slash balance issues. Obviously flared and prepped suspension wise cars would be less of a concern. But you are talking big dollar done right. I built a nearly 500hp small block Chevy for my dad's 69 Vette and while it is a blast to drive, it is highly unpredictable at speed and that is with a 295 tires on the rear. For me at least part of the fun of a 914 is the way parts are balanced together and have a nice feel... of course that said horse power is fun (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/happy11.gif)

In this sort of turbo'd car, you'd almost need first gear to get the boost up... or else you would feel a HORRIBLE turbo lag with as wide of a gear as second...

But then again... You dont really want to shift much in a car like a 914.. lol

The turbo, even though it isnt going to make the car a supercar... will probably feel incredibly quick.

with the turbo, having a cointinuous increase in acceleration makes the car feel so fast, its scary.... (with the big turbo on the race car, I found the sweet spot on the throttle, and scared myself half to death a couple times...)

Thanks for the tip I'll search for it. I was thinking of the black car with the plate frame "trust me it's stock" can't think of the screen name right now (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) but that set up he has for his intercooler just looks plain sick.

That's it, thanks Aaron. Yeah back in my street racing days we used to do stealth Nitrous set ups and whenever someone wanted to look under that hood we let em. Of course they couldn't look in the trunk that would spoil all the fun.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/w00t.gif) I've heard the "trust me it's stock/mostly stock/only a 307/mild cam and small four barrel/insert your own made up BS lie here, more than I can count.

Hehe..

I used to have a 70 SS Nova. Was a badass 327 in it. Cut the rear seat frame from a junker and made it look "real" built myself a hidden compartment that was about as deep as a Nitrous bottle (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

Was one hell of a summer till a piston decided that it had had enough. Oh those were the days. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif)
