Hi All:
I have some gas smell in my garage after I park the car. I don't see any gas leaking and thought it might be the gas cap gasket or charcoal canister or lines to the canister. The injector seem fine. The car is a 1974 2.0 L. Two questions: Any recommendations where I can source a NOS or high quality charcoal canister and required lines ? Am I missing something as to the gas smell? Thanks! Ron |

I had similar smell. There is a gasket under the fuel filler neck and a gasket under the sending unit that I replaced (you can get these rubber gaskets from 914rubber.com). These seems to fix the smell for me.
As referenced, there is an article on how to refill the cannister (get activated charcoal from a local pet store.) Also note that I replaced every single vacuum line up there (and in the engine bay). Finally, if you still have smell, you may have a leak underneath at the fuel lines and/or you may have a pinhole leak in the tank itself. For example on the pinhole leak, if the hole was halfway up the tank and you would smell gas more readily after filling up.. |

Thanks folks. All good info. Does anyone know where to source NOS or aftermarket charcoal canisters? I didn't think they were made anymore? You could check a local VW Parts shop. Or put up a WTB in the classifieds. Part# is 113 201 813B I think. Otherwise, if you can get a hold of some activated charcoal (about 2lbs) from a pet store (or amazon), you can do the replenishing job yourself in about 30 minutes. |

Yes, I saw those on EBay but figured they are spent by now. I am considering rebuilding my current fliter but wanted to "put it out there" first for a NOS or good aftermarket source in case someone had one. Thanks! Ron |

If you redo yours, get the charcoal in the pellet type. Not the aquarium chunk. When I bought some sourced thru Amazon it was pretty cheap.

74 was a transition year; the earlier 74s had the two vacuum lines running along the driver's side rocker and the canister was on top of the fuel tank, while the later ones had the single small line through the center tunnel and the canister was in the engine bay.
Double-check which you have; it would be easiest to put the system back to how it originally was. --DD |

My car was manufactured 10/73 (it's a 1974) and the plastic canister is in the frunk in front of the driver, not on top of the fuel tank. It has 2 lines on one end, 1 on the other. Part #113 201 823A on one side, #113 201 813 on the otger. Ron |
