Does anyone know what the purpose is of these 2 steel wires on the centere tunnel in front of the throttle pedal?

Yep. If your car shifts inconsistently and the clutch pedal is mysterious, that's why. Fortunately it's a pretty simple fix. Especially if the clutch tube weld at the firewall is still intact. |

Especially if the clutch tube weld at the firewall is still intact. The weld at the firewall is not intact , so how do I fix it? I must say I have no real problems shifting. |

If it shifts ok then just drive it till it doesn't. Not the nicest looking fix, but it should hold as well as anything else.

Especially if the clutch tube weld at the firewall is still intact. The weld at the firewall is not intact , so how do I fix it? I must say I have no real problems shifting. My clutch tube had been repaired at the firewall with a thicker plate welded to the tube then screwed to the firewall. When I removed the shifter starting some restoration, I noticed that the clutch tube had been on the wring side of the shift link and had a groove worn into it. Bu cutting an access port forward of the shifter, i devised a clamp fashioned form an electrical clamp and bolted the tube down tight in correct position, it aint going nowhere now. There are other posts that show where to cut openings. |

Thx for all the replies guys. I'm going to the garage today and put the car on the lift to see what we can do about the firewall side. The tube itself feels rather stable at the moment but for how long?
