I always figured that anybody who is quick on the car horn has been developing the wrong driver skills.

And that is why Italian cars always have air horns!

Get train horns. Then you can be a dick and get some laughs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Was thinking about this as I was reading the thread. Many years ago I lived next to a couple teenaged kids who would buy old diesel train horns and rebuild the diaphrams on them. They even had the air valve assembly. A buddy of mine bought a set and put them under the front hood of a VW type 3. Ran an air hose into the passenger compartment to an air tank. Didn't use it often, but it sure got attention when he did.

QUOTE(Rand @ Feb 23 2017, 12:19 PM) *

I borrowed a friends truck to tow a 914 to West Coast Rally in California a few years ago. He had one of these hooked up in that truck. Wow that damn thing was loud.
We stopped for gas in San Luis Obispo. The place had a mini market and on this nice sunny day, the place was packed. I went inside to use the bathroom and on my way out, my son decided he need to use it as well, and he tossed me the keys on the way by me. He had locked the truck when he got out with the remote, that also activated the alarm.
Can you guess what happened next?
Holly hell, that damn train horn was hooked up to the alarm (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Now this thing is blasting so loud it is unbelievable, plus there's a canopy over the gas pumps which is making it even worse. People are grabbing their children and running them to safety. I'm getting the dirtiest what the f*** are you doing looks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) and I'm pretty sure a few people shart themselves and we're wishing they had more in their brown pants (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) I finally get in the damn truck and get it turned off which I couldn't figure out for about a good solid 30 seconds that felt like about an hour. I'm sitting there at my son goes to get in the truck and it starts going off again. Talking about feeling like an ass. I won the a****** trophy that day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

There is a set at O'Riley's that are too loud. After you get used to them they put a smile on your face. Under $40 and you can't see them on my Yamaha RZ 350. The first time I honked them it scared me.

So with regard to the air horns.
I know the GT cars sported trumpets behind the front bumper.
Some apparently had mounted them like the 911s. I scored a set of the Italian
ones. I want to mount them like the 911/914GT
I remember seeing a pic in this forum of one of the GT with the horns in the front wheel well. I'm placing mine there as well. Anyone have that pic to share? Just wanted to see for reference. I'm not having any luck with the search button.
Cheers

Nah, you sound like a 911 which has trumpets stock!

I like the Hella trumpets, usually just doubles though. The distinct tone gets attention as well as the decibel level.

Except you sound like a Fiat!

The best tip is to drive your 914 like you are a motorcycle and invisible. I have the Hella horns going in my Six, but that is a measure of last resort. I hate to honk a horn, but if it becomes necessary, I want the asshat kid with the headphones on while he is "driving" and texting to hear me.

Hella SuperTone Horns. One of the loudest horns on the market, and are the same size as the factory horns.

They also sound VERY unique, which is enough to get peoples attention as well.

^ these. Behind the bumper pointed at the fog light grills...

In my ideal car set up, I would have 2 horns. One for the usual day to day situations and an air horn (like the one in the video which made me laugh and laugh) for the special circumstances where you really need to get someone's attention.

A friend of mine added the train horns, illegal in California but worth the risk.
