Some of those look like they didn't bother to take the handle off the car to drill them, how difficult to remove handle assembly (seriously, i don't think I've ever taken them off or apart before)

Might have to take mine off this weekend and throw mine on the mill (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The pic of the drilled out chain rings reminds me of the mania to reduce weight on racing bikes before carbon fiber and aluminum. Back in the day, a fellow cyclist said looking at a Swiss cheesed bike, If the guy took a big dump before the race he would reduce more weight than that.

Mine, drilled last weekend. It wasn’t easy. They certainly don’t seem any weaker. I’m seldom in mugger murderer neighborhood, my car hasn’t seen rain in years. Oh, and that is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard here! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

By the way, it’s a total of 3/4# side to side. I don’t know why Ralph and team did it. I just know that they did.

I knew Ralph Meaney , pretty well up in Wa. state... He had a lot of insite theories.. He told me he had his son do the doors to keep him busy and , a Machinist at a rocket factory did the handles... I did mine as a remembrance of Ralph Meaney,, and I like the look.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

Handle from a real 914-6 GT. Owner said the handles are original.
My son Wes in the car.
The car is returning to Le mans this year to race. Got to check out the car details on our recent trip to Carlyse.

I don't see myself drilling out my door handles. For a street car, it seems to be a bit silly to me. And I see the extra drag of the holes offsetting the decrease in weight. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

But like people have said before me in this thread..... It's not my car, It's yours. So do what makes YOU happy and stop worrying about the naysayers.

That's the same reason I can walk through Autorama in Dallas and look at the pickups with floorboards that are at eye level, and the low riders, and be able to admire them for the work and dedication that went into them. Neither are something I would do, but if they are beautifully done, I will say so.

I like the look okay kinda trick! But aren’t our door handles weak enough in stock condition? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

As I said earlier, it’s about 3/4 of a pound each side. Mine seem plenty strong after drilling.

I had that exact sign (minus the frame) hanging in my shop twenty five years ago.
Long gone.

He showed us a 4 inch binder for the history of the car. I'm sure the previous owners info is in there. I can ask him.

Meaney also lightened the already
bantamweight 914 as much as possible
during the season, liberally drilling holes
in everything from the outer door handles to the inner doorskins. "We got it so
light we had to bolt some flywheels from
big American cars under the passenger
selt to get it back uP to the minimum
weight ot l,aOS pounds required by the
SCCA," claims Meaney.
