Stopped in the local AutoZone (Hampton VA) today and saw that they had Valvoline VR1 20w50 racing oil (the one w/ ZDDP) on sale for $1.00 per quart. Salesman said they were closing it out--he thought the sale was company-wide.
I haven't seen it that cheap since I bought the 914 in the way-back days (back when oil came in cardboard cans). Hope this helps! Steve A- |

There's a discussion on The Bird's 911 forum where some guys are seriously hoarding, and a lot of others are getting butt-hurt about it...actually really does remind me of the Heady/SoS/Pliney Warz...
I snagged enough for my two cars for a couple years (<4 qts street car, ~9 qts dry-sumped race car) but I found not only 20W-50 out there, but some 50W and 60W as well. So don't just ask them about VV211 20W-5 but ask to search inventory for 50W (VV235) and 60W (VV241). Sadly, Autozone's web site does not return hits for anything VR1- related, so you can't check store inventory online. But find a knowledgeable employee and thy can do a search (I've found many to be surprisingly cooperative, especially once they recognize you've got a pretty cool "scam" going on). I might run the straight-weight 50/60 in the street car that tends to run hot with low oil pressure in the summer, and run the multi-vis on the race car with the external cooler. |
