Are most / many 914 owner's members of the PCA? Is there any value to it or is it tailored more to the pretentious 1 percenters who own own a Porsche simply for status? The club is large--very large. Your experience with it will vary depending on the people in the Region you join. (Some areas have several Regions nearby and people can choose which they want to belong to.) Some are more focused on the social aspects, others more on high-performance driving, others on touring, and some people will probably be focused on having a very expensive car. I don't know what the club local to you is like. Give it a try and see! I've been a PCA member for over 25 years now, and do not regret joining at all. --DD |

I find very few PCA members pretentious and no more than other clubs. Most are gear heads like us and simply always wanted one. I went to 1 PCA Meeting back around 1973.. What a bunch of pompous assholes. The 911 crowd... Better than thou.... Any 914 was looked down on.... The bastard stepchild.. Maybe things have changed a lot since then.... I joined PCA mainly for the subscription to Panorama, haven't gone to any meets.
My guess that the acceptance of the 914's varies depending on the other members that happen to be there, I personally know several 911 owners who love 914's as well. |

For example, Clay and I would MUCH rather participate in driving events - but next weekend our local PCA region (Maverick) is having a Drive-In movie night. The double feature movies are "Rush" and "Le Mans". We just couldn't resist signing up for it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) We've never done anything like that before and I'm looking forward to watching those two movies while sitting in my 914! I will try to refrain from rowing through the gears and making engine noises during the racing scenes... but no guarantees. Besides, there'll probably be other club members sitting in their Porsche's parked right next to mine doing the exact same thing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif) What? To a drive-in in a 914? But why, there's no back seat? |

My thought is that there are only a limited number of cars out there and for that reason, I will look to keep mine as original as possible. I disagree there are a LOT of cars out there, its just that a large percentage of them are rusted out piles-o-crap beyond the desires of millennials & the hipsters segment to roll up their sleeves and work on one to make it attractive & reliable. Grease, tools ...eewwwwww! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

It would be a mistake to paint all young owners with the brush labeling them as hipsters that don't get their hands dirty.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Certainly not true in the NE or MW from what I've seen, perhaps out west? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)
Around here there is a lot of focus in the younger generation on older Asian imports; I think a good piece of that may be that the parts generally are much less expensive even for a special import car. |

Joined PCA in 1976. Actually, a bunch of us who were all in our early to mid 20s joined and we all had 914s. We were all rabid track and autocross drivers. Yes, the 911 types all looked down on them until we showed them what our little cars could do. They were great times and a great bunch of people. Now 41 years later, I still belong to PCA, past president of two regions. Restoring my 68 911, driving my old Boxster, selling the 73 911 but I will never, ever part with the 914-6.
At monthly meetings, the 356 guys always stood in a group by the back door. They felt that Porsche did not build any cars after 1965. I've had two of those also, still have one of them. Charlie |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) "Out West"....it is similar and I have 5 kids and the youngest is 21. Cars now are component based. Something breaks you replace the entire component. Bumpers are ABS not chrome and metal. Controls are digital not analog. This is the world they are born into. It.s not the 70's anymore Scarcity is what is driving the interest in our cars as they are somewhat affordable still......still. Thank God with folks like Restoration design the unibody replacements component parts are somewhat available...and affordable if you have metal working skills which are not being passed on or kids educated in. The world is changing. During its day the 914 I thought was cutting edge.....that is what make it so interesting. |

When I first joined PCA back in '97, I ran into the same attitude. Almost a decade later, I bought my first Cayman and started autocrossing. Turns out the autocross and DE crowds are vastly different from the bought-it-for-the-name snobs, and actually care about driving the cars rather than what other folks think. |

Interesting article, not sure if I buy into it with the hipster connection or not.
I'm okay with more people getting into the marque, I just don't want to start seeing more "stanced" vehicles which has ruined the VW and BMW scene I think. Nothing worse than stretched tires, rims that poke out past the fenders, fake or forced rust on the hoods and staged luggage and gas cans on the roof racks.... "Get off my lawn" , hahaha (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

When we 1st joined the PCA and went to an event I used to always say I only owned a 914 and most of the 911 and other owners would say they too used to have one or liked those models as well. Believe it or not I think I've received more negative feedback on my 1.8liter cars from other 2.0 or larger motor owners. |

I agree, when I had the '92 Si I was approached weekly by a yoot wanting to buy it. Most yoots now have no idea what a 914 is, or who makes it. |

Back in the early 80's I was autocrossing an MGB with some circuit time and kept getting beaten by a 914 Creamsicle. Similar horsepower but my having drum brakes and lever shocks, he could just go in deeper and exit the turns faster, so 40 years later I finally got my own Can Am LE (a Bumblebee). I'm a new PCA member. So far, I haven't felt belittled for having a VW/Porsche. No obvious snubs yet. I think this might depend on the region and the individuals involved. |
