Ok
I searched the web and the Pelican tip said to place the trans in reverse then slide the coupler on the rod by going from first to reverse. Ok how do you tighten the pinch bolt? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

There is a set screw (hex drive - should be replaced, not re-used), no pinch bolt. Unless I am misunderstanding the question.

Rotate the shifter base, once unbolted, and rotate 90 degrees horizontally to expose where the rod enters the shifter as well as the pinch bolt. Apologies if I misunderstood the question as you must have done this already if you disconnected it.

It is not the cone screws it is the pinch bolt on the coupling on the shifter. Once I slide the coupler to the reverse position the pinch bolt is not accessible . I found a post by Dr Evil who says to use third gear instead of reverse but the bolt is still not accessible.

Ok it still is not accessible by rotating the base. If I try to use Dr. Evil way to use 3rd gear it should work. I'm starting over tomorrow.

You're not making sense Brian. It's hard to help without a better explanation of what you've done so far and what you're trying to do overall. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

First clarify if this is a tail shift or side shift. the pinch bolt on the side ahift is below the shifter. tail shift is as pictured at the back of the tunnel

Brian,
I'm dealing with the same issue you are. See my post entitled "Shift Bar Linkage Adjustment tips" for some good advice provided by others. However, mine is a side shift with the pinch bolt accessible from the top.

http://www.tangerineracing.com/transmission.htm

Precision Shifter Adjuster at the bottom. Also includes a little bit of short shifter action. Installed this in the race car a couple weekends ago (at the track, even) and I'm a convert.

I just talked to McMark. On a sides shift it can only be done in neutral. Trial and error method. When my bank account recovers from all the 914 trauma I will probably spring for the adjustable coupling.

I just saw this thread, and agree with McMark. All three of th service manuals I have access to say to do the side shift adjustment in neutral. I just did it after an engine drop and linkage bushing replacement. The process was simple - with the transmission in neutral, adjust fore-aft position by making the lever vertical, then for side-to-side, hold the lever to the 4-5 side while twisting the shift rod in the tunnel access hole clockwise as seen sitting facing forward. The pinch bolt should be easy to tighten at that point.
