try about 180hp...still nothing to sneeze about in a lightweight car.....

the rotarys are neat engines, I have a 1/4 scale Wankel that I'd like to re-engineer it to make the intake and exhaust like the new Reneises(sp?) motor

350 hp (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)

no thanks, 180 is wonderful, anything over 250 fp torque is just overkill. i would bet the difference between 250 fp and 300 fp on a 0 to 60 or even a 60 to 100 run would be less than 2/10 of a second. in the pro drag world thats a lot but in a 914 it is nothing.

as for what it feels like 180 fp is hard to tell from 100 fp in first, second gear it becomes clearer, third and above it is wonderfully different (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif)

i personally would not want more than 300 fp, remember the torque is your accelleration. if some body wanted to spend money they could slap a v6 desiel with the right gears and it would fly. a v6 deseil should be good for about 300 fp out of a 3 liter motor

Well the engine is in, for now,, It'll probably come out at least one more time. I am starting to wire up my MegaSquirt to the engine,, I just need to finalize where I plan to mount the ECU. I also can't seem to find my header nuts,, I know these are an oddball thread pitch,, any rotary gurus out there care to share their knowledge?

Scott,, I wasn't wondering how your car "felt", I was merely speculating on whether I can adapt a similiar radiator set up as you. Upon closer inspection I think it will be REALLY tight because I have a waterpump pulley that might need to be relocated (if possible).

why not use an electric water pump if you need clearance

as for the radiator end go get a junk rotary radiator and see if it will fit, buy using a stock radiator you know the size and flow are correct

Today I found out that my radiator is finally finished. I ordered a 16" x 28" double pass, double row radiator. It is going in the front. I suppose that mounting closer to the engine would have simplified the coolant lines.... and preserved the trunk space.... but my car is going to be a track car.

Hi Robert,
I see you are running the coolant lines in the inside channel, hows is that coming ? That looks pretty clean, without the typical coolant lines underneath the vehicle.

Thanks in Advance
Ted

Hi Ted,

I am kicking around the idea of routing the coolant lines through the center tunnel,, it wasn't the easiest way of doing it. I got rid of my heat exchange controls, and re-routed my accelerator cable. I sure hope it works, otherwise I'll have to patch those holes (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif)

Bret,

How do you plan on opening up your front end? Will you be using chrome bumpers?

more updates soon,,,,

you might want to add some insulation around the lines going to and from the radiator...the radiant heat might be unbearable in the summer months while sitting in traffic (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)

gday fellas just dropping u a line , please dont let any one use the series three rx7 12a oil cooler it will not be as good as the other types hey why did mazda stop using it ? anyhow i have had a couple of rotors (a friend of mine builds them for a living and is held in high regard) my first was a streetport the second was a 12a streetport with haltec ems and series 5 turbo running 18psi and a 1200 datsun wagon with a 12a sidefed pp(makes wild power at low rpms (sidefed port 51mm)) it had a 51mm ida webber with extended float bowl, four puck brass button clutch lightflywheel series5 turbo box and a cut down rx3 lsd with 4.4gears the engine had warranty also.
the some friend has just finnished a 20b reedvalve pp with a ballbearing t88 that eats boxs (we put a nissan truck box with twin plate drift clutch in it) it was making boost at idle so we had to chop the end of the reeds of a little it now makes the eunos cosmo step sideways with the slightest of tapps on the accellerator will send pics soon

Hi Folks,,

It looks like an update is long overdue here,, I've been side-tracked with the sale of my rims and my purchase of a parts car. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to work,, but then I would need a big card-board box for a garage. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Any body need any fenders or stuff off my parts car? Sawzall party soon!
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=...ST&f=20&t=32434

Progress pics are on the way,,,,

banksyinoz,,

Nice to have an Aussie rotor head lurking around. I am so jealous of the rotary scene down in Aussie land. My first car was an RX3,, and I must say some of the nicest rx's I've seen were from down under. I am using the S3 12A small oil cooler in series with a stock mazda oil cooler mounted in front. I was concerned that my oil was not recieving adequate cooling.

Turbo Paul (et al),

OK, so this is all VERY interesting stuff. I did some quick research and see it's possible to get a 3-rotor "E-shaft" from a "Cosmo" which is some kind of Japan-only Mazda. However, there's no such thing as a 4-rotor? True?

I totally buy the modularity of the rotary (I was always fond of the Audi 100 Wankel), but wonder where you can get a 4-rotor crankshaft for your 4-rotor project.

Just curious. Can't afford to do the conversion myself, i can't even keep my 1.8 running!!

I'm putting a 3 rotor peripheral port engine into my 914. I just got all the parts I need for the rebuild ($3400 Canadian. Yikes!) The 3 rotor (20B) engine only came in the Mazda Cosmo that was available in Japan and Australia. The Cosmo was a high end luxury car along the lines of a Lexus or BMW. If you want an engine you have to get one from a car at the wrecker. Mostly what you are buying the engine for is the irons and e-shaft (crank shaft). You can use 13B/13B-REW housings, rotors, bearings, etc on your rebuild. I scored a spare e-shaft on e-bay for $500 US just in case the one in my core engine needs to be replaced.

As for the 4 rotor there indeed was one made by the factory. It came in the famous Lemans winning race car called the Mazda 787B. It still is the only japanese car to ever win at Lemans. Shortly after it won they restricted or banned the rotary from competition and will likely be the only time a rotary wins at Lemans. There are a couple of companies that make 4 rotor e-shafts but they are not cheap. A friend of mine is going to work at the #2 rotary engine builder in Japan and he had the opportunity to buy a 4 rotor e-shaft.....for only $9000 US. What a bargain! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) He figured that it would cost him around $30,000 Canadian to build a 4 rotor perpherial port engine and that is with him doing all the labor for free. Custom e-shafts can be bought from both Japan and in New Zealand/Australia. There is a company called "Scoot" in Japan that has a 4 rotor RX7. Do a search on the web for them and you should find several videos of the car. I have them saved to disc but would need someone to host them if you can't find them elsewhere.

banksyinoz: Good to see you again. I thought you mentioned that the 20B PP was running 51 mm throttle bodies and I asked why they went smaller than the 55 mm that I had purchased for my car. In this thread you mention they are using 55 mm throttle bodies. Which one is it. Not trying to start anything. I just want to know what they were using and if it was the 51 mm units did they have a good reason for not going bigger. It could be important to know on my build up if I am going with the wrong throttle body.

P.S. Nice first gen. That looks like a stock factory turbo. To my knowledge we couldn't get those here. Too bad because I bet it really goes.

Hey Rotor-heads,my 1st real car was a Mazda R100.Cool car great "aircraft" style console,Ferrari Daytona-esque rear lights...what a rocket;I believe 110 HP.Eventually rotors broke thru walls-H2O came out the spark plug holes and talk about backfiring! Saw flames several times and went thru 3 exhausts! Still miss her tho'...keep on hummin. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap.gif)

hi guys
yeah not sure on the throttles now but normally the guy builds 51s on his pps thats why im under the impression that it was 51mm throttles but the guy who owns the car only lives like 5 minutes away so ill have to track him down and find out ,i know its important as it can affect the low rpm velocity ,yeah im really not sure now (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) my new mission to go find the 20b pp (i dont like to give misinformation, probably cause it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/stromberg.gif) me when i get told (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/stromberg.gif) ) i will find out for sure no problems sorry for the run around (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif)
