I've never seen the brass piece with what looks like a SS spring. How does that fit into the equation?

That is the new style thermostat that the vw factory used on the final beetles, works really great. we had this cable made to exactly duplicate the expensive factory original complete with the small lug that fits into the hollow nut. The same place in India who makes our perfect speedo angle drives as well as our driving light and horn grilles and our equalizer cables and console gauges makes this for us.

Isn't that the thermostat that fails in the flaps closed position to help overheat the engine?
