Not sure if this is still the situation but once my friend had YOM yellow and black plates on his 57 Lincoln. When the car was sold, he kept the plates and tried to put them on his 56 Chrysler. Plates were 56 issue, having a 57 sticker when it was on the 57. Even though it did not have stickers when he tried to put them on his 56, the DMV would not let him because they said they now have that particular plate recorded as a 57. So it seems that once you put a qualifying plate on YOM for a specific year, you cannot put it on a different year car even though that year is valid for YOM issue otherwise. Has anyone else ever tried something like this with success?

For the plate list, do we only want original issue blue plate numbers for 914's or should we include other makes? Seems that we would want any make having original issue along with the where the car was first registered. Where is important since the DMV distributed plates to field offices in batches and less populated areas went through their plates slower the big cities.

1971 914, brought to California from back East somewhere by the PO, so I don't know when it was first registered in CA.

YOM plates are reassigned. When you go in to DMV they even want to see the year registration sticker which must match your car that it will be reassigned to. So you are supposed to find a set of plates (yes both are required) with a ~40-year old registration sticker visible. Right, good luck with that. Just find plates you want to use and the registration tag in the correct years is available elsewhere. Once reassigned to a vehicle...its final. The sole purpose of this list is to help folks locate model year correct plates to be as accurate as possible.

For this list, we only are interested in listing originally issued CA Blue/Gold plates so the car must have been sold in CA originally - not imported at some later date. Could be plates from a different car make, that is not as important as documenting that the plates are from a certain model year, for our purposes.

Dad's car was bought in early 1977 (secondhand) and assigned this plate. The car was originally sold in Oklahoma.

Interesting Ed. I included it as a book end for the list. Still Blue/Gold and disclosed as a 1977 issue. Nice.

This looks like a 1977 issue too. The car was likely brought into CA at ~3 years old, in 1977, so it would be a 49-state car. If you you can confirm I will add it to the list.

Probably sometime well after April 1980, given its numerical sequence.

This was on my 74 V8 car but I only have one. What do I do? Car has not been reg in CA for several years and in non opt. I do not want to pay high back registration costs to bring it current.

Ask google for the places that will replicate a second plate for you. Check with DMV to see what their reqs are on that.

Hope this is not abusing the thread but I am interested in a pair that would be correct for a 76. Ferg, if you are open to selling/trading something from your stash, I have a pair with DPD and another with BWN. Going to use DPD if I can't find something better.

If it helps the list, I can see what stickers are the earliest ones applied but imagine BWN would be 70 and DPD not much later. Have a single plate 346 SIR which was original issue for a 77 (non teener) sold in South San Francisco. That car caught on fire but at least it was not a 914!

It appears this plate was a later 1970s car, not original to 1973.
