All,
I just had a revelation - though I know that there were dwindling sales (supply) of 914-6 's in 71 and 72, I got it stuck in my head that the passenger seat was not adjustable in all years of 914-6 cars. A few years ago I saw a silver 914-6, good price, ignition on the left with an updated engine. Did not go so far as to compare the serial numbers since the right seat was adjustable I assumed that the car had been modified from a 4 to a 6. Though that moving the ignition was excessive at the time....hhhmmm.... needless to say I passed on the car. Today (for reasons that I cannot explain) I realized that I may have passed on a pretty good bargain..... Question: Did the seat move on the '71-'72 914-6 cars? Many thanks in advance, CTC911CTC (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) |

Just in the 72's but I know quite a few guys who modified the fixed seat to movable since it was easy to do. It was done in my 4 when I purchased in '84.

I sold my original 914-6 a couple of years ago, with a later seat installed by a previous owner. Strange reason to not check the VIN or discregard it having a LH key position.

Just in the 72's ... Also note that the '72 /6 cars had the ignition switch on the steering column, just like the /4 cars. As far as i know, no 914/6 with the ignition switch on the dash came with a movable passenger seat. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

I thought that they stopped manufacturing the 6 in 1970-71? Am i wrong on this? |

It was a hot ticket in the late 1980's to upgrade early cars to late seating. Lots doors and suspension went that way too.

We "updated" the passenger seat in my Six to adjustable. I am not tall and neither is my wife. So I didn't want to have her feel like she was sitting in the back seat while in the car with me.

There is very little known about this car. I doubt that it got a 914/6 VIN. So, it could be viewed as a conversion. Was it a fully completed car obtained from Karmann who only built the 914/4? I doubt it was a trimmed chassis by Karmann with 914/6 parts, and assembled on a Porsche production line.

FWIW. I think AA may have or did have the last factory 6. A 72 m.y.? I recall a write up about the acquisition in the first AA catalog I had. Perhaps George can confirm.
For you youngsters, pre-internet days. Puzzling questions had to be figured out. There was no near instantaneous gratification answers to the questions. Rotary phone days. |

The 75 listed in the production list on this site has never been confirmed to exist. There is only the one picture of it, and that is from a long way away. Rumor states it is a real six, with a real six VIN, assembled for some muckety muck at the factory. Built in 75 by the factory with 914-6 parts from the replacement parts bins.
No one has been able to confirm or deny its existence, like the Men in Black. |
