Took my car to the mechanic. Apparently 914's were built with two types of distributors, unfortunately mine cost $700, others are approximately $80.
Question: Will either distributor work? |

I sold 2 fully restored ones with all new parts for $249 each. Where did you get your price?

There are actually way more than 2 different part numbers.
but basically your mechanic is (most likely) defining stock L-jet, versus Stock D-jet do you even need a distributor? they are rebuild able. but is your mechanic trying to change out the F.I. Points? or a worn and wobbly shaft? I'd buy a used one most likely but there are also brand new options the 1/2/3 group buy could even work or you may just need F.I points? it doesn't sound like your exactly clear on what the mechanic is trying to fix or change. Ask more questions. even if you don't want to do the job yourself there are alternatives that cost less than 700 |

Thanks I don’t want to disparage anyone unfairly but if the mechanic presented that as the only option it might be time for a new mechanic

Good mechanics can be hard to find, let alone one that is willing to work on a 914. Finding one that is willing to work on a 914 and knows what they’re doing is even harder still.
If you can do the work yourself you’ll come out way ahead in the long run. |
