Tractor mentality, they made it simple. If you read explosion the two pronged forks that bolt to the decompression shaft just pushed down on the valve spring retainer taking the pressure off the valve seat. Of course I could not find a picture of the fork in the parts manual, but the basic part numbers of the rest of the system are marked in red on the image. Really simple system just a pull cable out of the dash

Same guy who started Factory Five.

I had a builder in AZ do it...per my specs...lots of small custom touches.

That is really cool Oscar. I really dig the way they did the rear fenders, like a Doozy boat tail.

Had plans to work on the 914 today, but I came across some car audio gear from my first car - a 1976 Capri 2.8. Not sure why I kept the gear when I sold the car about 35 years ago, but I did. A while back I had an idea to take it and make a garage stereo. It's a Sanyo amplifier and passive equalizer. Somewhere along the way I lost a smaller amplifier that ran the front speakers, so I guess no quadraphonic. Had a power supply and a Iphone to RCA cable and found some old computer speakers. Sounds pretty good. Just need to get some brackets, screws, velcro etc to mount everything, after I clean everything up. Had to laugh when my wife saw it and asked if it was going in the 914.

something french has been keeping me from needlessly fiddling with the 914.

After 24 years the headliner fully collapsed last year - the old foam interlayer crumbled to dust under the onslaught of australian summer heat and UV assault. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

3 days of the most harrowing experience in automobile repair i've experienced in my shallow life.
2 full days with a day off between to recover nerves and confidence.
about 5% mechanical fixings and 95% plastic clips - none of which could be described as straight-forward or common sense.
add to that i have a factory manual but its minus the body work section and all internet research i did merely described how to break each and every part removing it.
(the problem with these cars is they got owned by a generation of boy racers after the first owner and the world of enthusiast websites is full of info from UK youth with 10 thumbs and no mature mental processes.) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

but i got it all apart with zero breakages.
now i have added yet more useless skills to my cv.

next week will clean all traces of this yellow foam shite out of the car.
will clean the fragile glass reinforced wood pulp shell of all traces of foam and glue residue.
off to the specialist fabric fitter.
then back to the workshop.
reinstall. (should be a bit easier than the un-install).

this weekend i will be washing my hair repeatedly to get rid of the yellow foam dust stuck to my scalp.

good thing this crappy manufacturing tech was not really invented when the 914 was made. give me screws and bolts any day with plastic press in fixing covers. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

in case you are wondering why i bothered with the renault.
it only looks like a shopping cart hand bag car.
under its surface beats a heart of solid lunatic french dirt and evil intent.
renault sport clio 172.
probably my favourite car ever. which is saying something given i love the 914.
i've had the 914 for 37 years. and the clio for 21 years.
