I spent time in the storage shed, sorted through a ton of Harley parts, took tons of pix and posted those parts for sale in several different venues.

Also, ordered another large blasting cabinet and a vacuum/reclaimer unit along with 50 lbs of soda, so I can clean a bunch of parts here in So. Cal (since my other blasting cabinet is in AZ).

Couldn’t work on it while I was driving it.

Gawd how I love how this 48 year old car performs. Acceleration is strong enough with the 3.0 and cornering ability is absolutely insane. It always puts a smile on my mug.

Had to focus my attention on a water-cooled VW that has a problem being a water-cooled VW (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

This thermostat housing was a pain to get off the motor (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) ...

Attached Image

... and installing the new one - just as tough ... I didn't feel like removing the alternator to get this repair completed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Attached Image

Attached Image

Need to burp the system tomorrow.

OOPs ... I almost forgot ... I had to remove a thermal sensor in the cooling system's piping to start the burping process. It's held in place with a plastic U-shaped retainer clip. When I removed the clip, it disappeared to some God-forsaken place in the engine bay. I NEED that clip, as the pressure that builds up in the system will surely dislodge the thermal sensor in short order.

Attached Image

I searched high and low for it, but to no avail. I guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get one from the local VW dealer (probably at some ridiculous price) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Yesterday, took the wife's water-cooled Beetle out front and washed it. Figured what the hell, lowered the Westy ('Eileen') off the lift, drove it out front for a wash job as well.

Also, took delivery of my new Harbor Freight blast cabinet, reclaimer/vacuum unit and a 50 lb. bag of soda. Need to assemble the cabinet and construct a dolly to move it around (like we did with my bead-blast cabinet) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Had an appointment with my spine surgeon this morning (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) Good news, it doesn't look like I need surgery (just yet), and being referred to a pain management specialist. Bad news, until i get to see him/her, the pinched sciatic nerve still hurts like a mo-fo after standing/walking for any length of time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

FedEx delivered another shipment from Harbor Freight today. Everything I ordered from them arrived yesterday, so I was at a loss as to what today's shipment could be (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I was even more confused after I opened the box ...

Worked on getting the windshield in my buddy's Speedster.
Totally nerve-wracking working on a car like this that's just been painted...

building custom closet cabinets for my Son's new house. Found some of Dad's German wood working tools, it is so nice to work with some high quality wood tools. Made me raise my game.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) I am actually enjoying working with wood (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) I still prefer metal, but now I need a wood shop... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif)

Not really

Too much heavy equipment work!

Pressed and welded in tapered inserts to fix the wallowed out tie rod end bores.

Repacked the stab cylinders on my backhoe (blew one out a few weeks ago). Of course the last guy who did the right cylinder stripped the packing gland threads and welded on the nut so I had to cut the nut welds, rebuild the thing, and then welded it back on. He also left out the o-ring...here I always wondered why it weeped. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Not worth spending $400 on a new gland or the time to build it up and re-thread when a few tack welds will do the trick. Should the shaft have been re-chromed...probably...ehh

And the happy backhoe...including loader lift cylinder with an internal leak. One more thing to fix. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Final (hopefully) skin graft surgery went down yesterday.

The main downside is that I traded one surgical site for two. Both the graft and the donor site are now vacuum bagged again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bs.gif)

7 days with these contraptions again and I ought to be on the mend.

Looking forward to getting back to chassis work before snow flies. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

Nice boy toy. Nice fab & welding! My neighbor has an old worn out Ford 545 skid steer. Last time I used it the Kingpins were shot! I think he wants your number! Kidding of course, but, nice work keeping old iron working.

@Superhawk996

This thing is one of those toys that you probably work on a day for every 4 days of working with it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) But, way less expensive than renting. The field it's in there is about an acre and was heavily wooded with a lot of ledge. Cleared it all and now am finishing chipping out the ledge.

Biggest thing I'm trying to figure out now is how to replace some of the bushings and align bore without any of the correct equipment. The bucket has ~1/4" of slop in each bushing. Makes it tough to grade. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

Those Ford's are nice machines-in some ways far better designed than these old Deere's. The Deere machines let you push them past their design point and break stuff while the Fords seem to just stop.

My side hustle is indoor rock climbing. The wife and I opened a new location this month. It was nearly a 5 year effort, with plenty of drama along the way. I have been able to keep up a regular if slow pace on the car up until the last few months. We're open now and I hope to claw back some time of my own to keep restoring.

What are your liability insurance premiums like? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Yesterday, had my first visit with a new pain management doctor and got a cortisone shot in the arm. Helping a little, but next week, going in for an epidural between L4 & L5.

Still plugging away building the HF soda blasting cabinet. Making several modifications to it, which are supposed to improve the efficiency many fold. Some day, I should do these upgrades to the old bead blasting cabinet too.

Less than my family's health insurance, if you count my contribution + my employer's contribution!

My buddy had a minor incident at his last track day. Too hot into turn 11 at Sonoma Raceway, ran wide on the brakes, got into the marbles and glanced off the tire wall.
It was enough to crack his splitter.

So today was "Fun with Composites!"

I'm just getting started on it. Probably a few day effort, but that includes curing time.

Continued with the soda blast cabinet build/modifications. Still waiting for an air pressure regulator/water trap unit and a media metering valve that should be here this week. Also need to construct a dolly to move it around ... then I can mount the vacuum/media reclaimer unit on it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

These mods are supposed to vastly improve the efficiency of these inexpensive Harbor Freight cabinets.
