Hey Guys, Im new here. I have this 70 that needs a lot of work but Im ready to go to town. I am not sure if I want to convert to a 6 yet. If I do, I have a 3.0 and a 3.6 I could choose from. What kind of power can I get out of a 4 before it makes more sense to go with a 6?

Went down the hot four route before changing directions and going with a small six. Sounds amazing, I trust a flat six with 150+ hp more than a Type IV with that kind of power, and 200hp is all you need (!) in a narrow car. No regrets, but it is heavier.

If I was starting with a blank slate on a car I had no history with, I'd do a 914 with the look of a factory 914-6 GT but build it very light with a 2.5-liter STi flat four and transmission or maybe a 718 GTS engine + transmission. 400 hp to push 1800-1900 lbs with a decent interior should be doable, and would be a blast. I'm with Pete. Do a small six and keep the car as stock as possible, with one exception.......with nobody wanting to buy a 718 new...just wait a few years and you have a 400 HP car with AC for half the price with a 4 banger. Why got through all the effort to put it in a 914.

IMHO.

One reason, as your logic is irrefutable: Because a 718 is 700-1000 pounds heavier than the 914 I am thinking of with the same engine (and, I think, better looking to boot). I suspect it would be a blast.

Ideal mid-engined combo for me would be a 987.2 Boxster S or Spyder (or Cayman S or R) 6MT with all the comforts and then a wild 914 hot rod.
