Hey Guys, Im new here. I have this 70 that needs a lot of work but Im ready to go to town. I am not sure if I want to convert to a 6 yet. If I do, I have a 3.0 and a 3.6 I could choose from. What kind of power can I get out of a 4 before it makes more sense to go with a 6?

Went down the hot four route before changing directions and going with a small six. Sounds amazing, I trust a flat six with 150+ hp more than a Type IV with that kind of power, and 200hp is all you need (!) in a narrow car. No regrets, but it is heavier.
If I was starting with a blank slate on a car I had no history with, I'd do a 914 with the look of a factory 914-6 GT but build it very light with a 2.5-liter STi flat four and transmission or maybe a 718 GTS engine + transmission. 400 hp to push 1800-1900 lbs with a decent interior should be doable, and would be a blast.

If you already have the engines, I wouldn’t hesitate.

I assume you have already assessed the rust and repair costs to restore it because that alone can change ones spendable income amount quickly. Once that's been addressed throw the 3.6 in there.

A T4 can be built reliable to 160hp, 180hp with nickies, but once in the nickies price territory you should start looking hard at a /6.
Most T4 big engines failures can be linked to poor combo choices and inferior parts.

Beautiful engine. Too bad you see so little if it in a 914. The 911 was built to showcase the fan.

I'm with Pete. Do a small six and keep the car as stock as possible, with one exception.......with nobody wanting to buy a 718 new...just wait a few years and you have a 400 HP car with AC for half the price with a 4 banger. Why got through all the effort to put it in a 914.
IMHO.

One reason, as your logic is irrefutable: Because a 718 is 700-1000 pounds heavier than the 914 I am thinking of with the same engine (and, I think, better looking to boot). I suspect it would be a blast.
Ideal mid-engined combo for me would be a 987.2 Boxster S or Spyder (or Cayman S or R) 6MT with all the comforts and then a wild 914 hot rod.

Nice starting point. I would make sure the chassis is rust free in all critical areas first. If it were me, I would do a GT inspired car with a 6, which ever you want of the two. I would consider the Tangerine Racing metal flares as well as the traditional GT flares. I would go with the Tangerine if it were my car just because it will stand out in the group a bit more.
The slope is steep and slippery so pencil it all out first and then add 30% more to the budget for all of the stuff you forgot......

Likely too wide without some serious suspension mods, M96/97 engines are too wide. Plus add the fact that they are damn heavy and a rebuild cost as much as a hot rod /6, it would be cheaper/easier to do an LS engine.

If it were me (and of course this all depends on budget), use the 3 liter six that you have, PMO's or EFI ITB's, Tangerine flairs, 915 with cable shift, 914 werkes conversion stuff, FRP hood, trunk and bumpers, Watkins Glenn seats from GTS (with a cool tartan) 911 front suspension, 944 brakes maybe in Steve McQueen Slate Grey.
I agree about big four builds, no personal experience but I am thinking that by the time you build a reliable 180 hp four youll be close to a solid 3.0 liter build with way more grunt and longevity. If you dont think a six is a good idea, check out Bob's video below.
Unrestrained budget - I might do the Polo motor with EFI and a 901 just to be different and preserve the light weight agility of a four !

if you have the motor its a huge chunk of $$$$ you have saved, get the body up to scratch, upgrade brakes etc,in between slowly buy up the parts for the conversion ,be prepared to spent a fair chunk of cash for these parts...it really mounts up in the end.
Which ever motor you choose you could easily offset the conversion cost by selling off one of the motors and have change left over for the body/running gear.
Each of the motors you have will provide plenty of power but each one has its own merits dependant on what you want from the car.
You will not regret fitting a six to your car ...period.

There is no sweeter sound then a 6 and you already have 2 that you can choose from.. The 3.6 complicates things a little bit with exhaust options depending on year and would likely do a 3.0 myself .. Conversion parts will cost about 6-7 k. My website is 914-6werkshop.com if your looking for pricing or contact me for suggestions..

Steel finned cylinders cast over alloy sleeves and Nicasal bore coating ….think that's right.
Superior heat transfer over solid cast iron barrel,Porsche did this on there higher HP six cylinder motors and later on with the 944/968 and 928 water pumpers.

This is what I would build that car into. Engine is up to the end user, but I'd probably go STi tuned to 400hp with a Subaru 6MT.

I think the 987.2 is going down the route of the 914-6, meaning desirable and they didn't make a lot of em.
As far as the OP, there is nothing like the sound of a flat six.

call 914ltd if you don't care if it is not stock under the rockers, other wise you'll need to get pieces from restoration design, this is assuming that you have the skills or are willing to learn the skills to restore this car.
