When I was removing the old exhaust of the replacement engine, 5 of the studs came out. the stud snapped off just under the frozen bolt on one of the studs that did not com out. That broken stud came out with a generous application of heat. The other two studs would not come out!!!! I tried penetrating oil, I tried heat(LOTS of heat). None of it worked. I tried a fancy bolt extractor and that just snapped the stud right at the head. I tried drilling and using a screw in extractor and that did not work, It actually put a crack in the head. Finally I just drilled and tapped it for a new stud.
The replacement engine is in the car but I need to finish installing thew carbs, fuel lines, cables, etc. One big issue I am having is getting the front shift rod and the firewall bushing to play nicely together. I can not get the rod to slide through the bushing. If I push hard enough, the rod pushed the bushing out of the firewall. What is the correct diameter for the front shift rod where it passes through the firewall? I am wondering if the PO(S) put a sleeve on the rod. Or is there a trick I am missing to get the rod to slide through the bushing without bushing the bushing out of the firewall? |
