It has been fun but as of tomorrow morning, 9-4-green will be leaving my garage and heading off to it's new life in a new garage. I'm not selling it, my oldest is taking it with him when he moves into his dorm for his first year of college. It is bitter-sweet beyond description. My oldest son is going off to college. He took enough dual enrollment classes in high school to enter college as a sophomore with a 4.0 GPA. His schedule is a little heavy but he will get out with his masters in finance and a minor in theater in four years. I can't put into words how proud I am of him. He has come so far. He was three when he was diagnosed with autism. He was non-verbal, he had multiple sensory issues, he was completely non-social with anyone but his mom or I. Other kids might as well have been invisible, adults who tried to talk to him caused a blood curdling, "I'm being murdered with a knife", top of the lungs scream. If you think of a typical child with autism in your head, yeah, that was my son at three years old. My wife spent his early years taking him to therapists, doctors, specialist, etc, etc. She typically spent over 40 hours a week taking him to people who could help him and it paid off. My wife and my son worked so hard and I am so proud of both of them. My son is heading off on his next great adventure and I am so excited for him, even more than I am sad to see him go. I am happy he is not going far, his college is just a few miles down the road. It is time for my son to go off on his own and he gets to do it in the coolest car on campus. Congrats to the 3 of you. I can’t imagine how proud you must be. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) |

That is truly inspiring and amazing. Congratulations to your son for all of his accomplishments thus far and for you and your wife for getting him to college and with a very cool car that just happens to be a great color too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
Oh, hopefully he won't drive it like he stole it...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Thank you all for the kind words.
They are safely moved into college life. Nathan has his 914 flag and his award from last years Rt 66 event hanging proudly in his dorm room. We got him moved in and set up in his room and then went to get some food on campus. I think he is going to like college. He noticed (in his words), " a lot of really cute girls". The 914 looks really small among all the SUV's and modern sedans in the parking garage. Small is ok, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog. I am not worried about him driving it like he stole it, he drives like a grandma. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yellowsleep[1].gif) |

NARP plate that is awesome!
Don't put Swepco in the trans. Worst thing I ever did to my 914. The syncros need PLAIN OLD 90wt cheapo gear oil to work properly. Once contaminated it will take 2 or 3 changes to get it all out. |

Love that picture!!
I can't wait for RSR 7. Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. My wife isn't a fan of the plate but Nathan and I like it. Thanks for the info on the Swepco. I had no idea. Looks like 9-4-Green will be coming back for a visit and flush soon. |

I had a great time with my son at the C&C at FourTilFour this morning. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif)
Our time at the Arizona emissions testing station was not as much fun. The car failed (again). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif) 1.8 liter with dual Webers AFAIK it is stock other than the Webers. Stock cam, stock pistons, etc. It is at factory specs, idles at 900 and the timing is at 7.5. The test report has the numbers from the previous test listed at the bottom. I'd like to think I can get it to pass with just an adjustment to the timing. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get it to pass? Attached thumbnail(s) |

I recommend you take it to a shop that has experience getting VW engines to pass emissions. Timing, idle speed, jets, accel pump setting, etc are all interrelated. Plus they know which stations have people that know how to drive the car to help it pass.

I ended up taking the car to Don Jackson and he got it to pass emissions and Nathan had some fun with it at college. He took his room mates out for some rides and drove it to the store occasionally.
Then he noticed that it was marking it's territory a little too much so it returned to the garage. Nathan wasn't too disappointed. He LOVED college and didn't have much need to leave campus so the 914 was sitting most of the time. He is now back at home for the summer and we are dropping the engine and trans to fix some oil leaks this weekend. To go with fixing the oil leaks, we have been on a buying spree for AC parts(driving in Phoenix in the summer without AC is brutal). We are building a custom AC system using an original under dash controller/evaporator unit with a new Sanden sd5h11 6333 compressor and a 11" X 21" parallel flow condenser mounted to the engine lid with dual high flow/low profile 10" fans. The condenser is bigger that the factory condenser on my 1990 944 Cab. I will be using R-134 and I am hoping the more efficient condenser design and larger size will offset the inefficiency of using R-134. The biggest challenge was finding a mounting bracket for the compressor. I found a supplier out of Singapore that listed a top mount for a type 1 engine but no one had a mount bracket for a type four on any website I could find. I've read somewhere here on 914world that Ed at gilmore-enterprises.net was building a 914 kit but when I checked his website, no dice. The website did say to call if you have questions or want info about custom or future kits, etc so I called and Ed hooked me up with a mounting bracket and a pulley and all the mounting hardware. There is a shop in Phoenix that specializes in rebuilding old AC lines and building custom AC lines. I am debating the merits of having them make the lines vs buying a crimper and doing it myself. |

A am wondering if I need to create a shroud to block off the small area of the condenser that isn't covered by the fans.
The angle of the picture is deceptive. The fans hang off both ends by about 1/8 th of an inch. There is very little wasted fan space and uncovered condenser space. This will be mounted to the underside of a GT style engine lid. If I get creative I could set this up to pull air into the engine compartment or push air out. What is the normal airflow direction through the engine lid. I don't want to fight against the normal airflow. |

Is it ok to use push rod tubes that have some small dings/dents from being removed?
