I am trying to replace all the old, worn out bushings from the shifter to the transmission but I can't find them on the 914rubber website. Does anyone have links for the bushings I need?
It is a 71 that has had a side shifter installed.

I got what turned out to be a dead end lead on another 914 for sale.
I did get a nice picture of my car out of the deal so it wasn't a total loss.

Attached Image

My son is out of school for at least two weeks and I have no work for two weeks so I guess we will get to some work on the car.

Pull the 1.7 with the messed up spark plug hole and install the 1.8 I got on the cheap from Patrick Motorsports.

SS fuel lines from Tangerine
New shifter bushings from 914Rubber and Tangerine
Clean up a bunch of wiring and misc items

Found this for the fuel pump. How common a modification is this?

I got my HF media blast cabinet set up and spent some time cleaning up the fan housing. I am trying to decide if I should paint it or leave it raw aluminum.

What are the pros and cons of paint VS raw?

I did a clean up on my motor last year. Blasted the shroud and painted it a matte aluminum. The raw aluminum raw is porous and will trap dirt. I would put a finish on it to seal it.

Old Exhaust in the picture has been removed. I will be reusing the performance header system that was on the old 1.7 liter that just came out of the car. No heat exchangers but heat is the last thing we need in Arizona. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blowup.gif)

I also used stainless steel allen head bolts instead of the original cheese head screws on the shroud. Easier to install and remove if needed.

My fan shroud was put together with flat head screws. I've got a good friend who has an industrial and aerospace fastener company. I am going to head over there in about 30 minutes and see what cool connectors he can recommend. In another thread, Clay recommended some MB exhaust nuts. I'm going to check those out.

When I was removing the old exhaust of the replacement engine, 5 of the studs came out. the stud snapped off just under the frozen bolt on one of the studs that did not com out. That broken stud came out with a generous application of heat. The other two studs would not come out!!!! I tried penetrating oil, I tried heat(LOTS of heat). None of it worked. I tried a fancy bolt extractor and that just snapped the stud right at the head. I tried drilling and using a screw in extractor and that did not work, It actually put a crack in the head. Finally I just drilled and tapped it for a new stud.

The replacement engine is in the car but I need to finish installing thew carbs, fuel lines, cables, etc.

One big issue I am having is getting the front shift rod and the firewall bushing to play nicely together. I can not get the rod to slide through the bushing. If I push hard enough, the rod pushed the bushing out of the firewall.
What is the correct diameter for the front shift rod where it passes through the firewall? I am wondering if the PO(S) put a sleeve on the rod. Or is there a trick I am missing to get the rod to slide through the bushing without bushing the bushing out of the firewall?

Engine swap is done(ish)

The engine is in.
SS fuel lines are in.

I got everything buttoned up enough for my son to drive it to a year-end event for his HS senior class.
They didn't have prom and their senior trip is cancelled but one family put together a dance with a DJ and food, etc so they did get a chance to get together with their classmates before they all head off to the rest of their lives.

Swepco on the garage floor. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

I may have overfilled the trans. Would the excess trans oil leak out the axle and front seals?

It is either excess oil leaking out or I need to replace some seals.

Drove it across town to pick up some parts the the dealer.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

They changed their hours and the parts department is not open on Saturdays any more.

Nothing like a cross town drive in 105 degree heat for no reason.

On the plus side, it ran like a champ with no oil leaks and just a few drops of trans oil leaking.

It has been fun but as of tomorrow morning, 9-4-green will be leaving my garage and heading off to it's new life in a new garage.

I'm not selling it, my oldest is taking it with him when he moves into his dorm for his first year of college.

It is bitter-sweet beyond description. My oldest son is going off to college. He took enough dual enrollment classes in high school to enter college as a sophomore with a 4.0 GPA. His schedule is a little heavy but he will get out with his masters in finance and a minor in theater in four years.

I can't put into words how proud I am of him. He has come so far.

He was three when he was diagnosed with autism. He was non-verbal, he had multiple sensory issues, he was completely non-social with anyone but his mom or I. Other kids might as well have been invisible, adults who tried to talk to him caused a blood curdling, "I'm being murdered with a knife", top of the lungs scream. If you think of a typical child with autism in your head, yeah, that was my son at three years old.

My wife spent his early years taking him to therapists, doctors, specialist, etc, etc. She typically spent over 40 hours a week taking him to people who could help him and it paid off. My wife and my son worked so hard and I am so proud of both of them.

My son is heading off on his next great adventure and I am so excited for him, even more than I am sad to see him go. I am happy he is not going far, his college is just a few miles down the road.

It is time for my son to go off on his own and he gets to do it in the coolest car on campus.

I just read your last post to my wife. We both teared up a bit and she beat me to the "that is AWESOME!" statement. I can't imagine the challenges or the level of pride you must feel. Wow, just wow. Such an amazing accomplishment. Huge congrats to you, your wife and especially your son! Well done, young man!!!

Congrats to the 3 of you. I can’t imagine how proud you must be.
