So, I've been a member here since 2011. I've been interested in 914's for longer than that. But to be honest my focus was always in the 356, 912 and 911.
After I sold my 944S2 I went on the hunt for a good 912. Which I did find, and bought... so I thought. We had a gentleman's agreement. Shook the guys hand and planned to pick the car up a week later. Day on forehand the owner started to act weird. Long story short, I didn't buy the 912. Actually after numerous 'failures' in buying an air-cooled Porsche I got fed up with the entire Porsche scene. I had cash burning in my pocket and so I bought a VW bug instead. And another one. And a 69 westy camper... One of the bugs ended out as a buggy project the other got sold. So after just recently selling my buggy I finally bit the bullet and bought my first 914. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) Finally! The '69 westy stays in the fleet though. That's for weekends with the family. That brings me to my plans. I'm trying to make it a focussed weekend driver. So I'm planning on new/ better shocks, maybe bigger sway bars, sticky tires, upgraded discs all without losing the stock look. It's going to take some time the find the proper parts... but since the car is still currently in L.A. at a dealer and I'm located in The Netherlands I still have some time on my hands. Update here |

@911GT2
In my experience you have to be able to negotiate from both points of view - both the buyer and the seller. I was once involved in a $9000 deal for a 914/6 (tells you how long ago this was). I closed the deal with a gut feeling that something wasn't right. As I was getting ready to drive it home cross country, about 20 minutes out from the dealership I realized the only way my gut feelings could be true is if the car had been VIN Swapped (illegal in all of the U.S.). I found a small tag of MIG wire under the front right fender VIN. It indeed had been removed from another car and welded into this tub. To make a very long story short. I resolved it with the selling dealership by allowing them to take back the car and to refund me 90% of the money, and to get me back to the airport and on the return flight I had booked just in case I hadn't bought the car. Should I have had to accept a 10% haircut to get out of a fradulent deal - No. Should I have turned them in - Maybe, but, that assumes I could prove they knew what they were selling was fradulent. I didn't feel I could meet that standard of proof. The bottom line was that I learned a $900 lesson about following my gut instinct before closing a deal (for cars or anything else). Over the course of my life it was a valuable lesson that has paid for itself several times over. The dealership got somthing for thier trouble and the fact that they now had a car that they could no longer represent as an orignal 914/6. I apologize to the 914/6 community, I have no idea what happened to that car nor do I have any documents on it or the VIN of it. Hopefully it has been wrecked or rusted out by now. 911GT2 - you might consider doing the same. Get BHCC to cancel the sale and hold back some small % for thier trouble. That cuts you free from the drama and allows you to get on with finding a better car and someone that will help you every step of the way. |
