Are the front shift rods the same diameter for side and tail shift transmissions?

My car is a '71 that was converted to a side shift transmission. I bought the Rix conversion shift bushing from 914 rubber but I can not get it to stay on place when I push the front shift rod through the firewall. It pushes the bushing out. The shift rod diameter where it passes through the firewall is .92 inches, 23.39 mm.

What bushing do I need for that size front shift rod?

if I understand correctly, you ask for what side firewall bushing you need ?
I have a late shiftrod and Late bushing (1973 sideshift)
diameter of rod is 20.1mm and Late bushing inside diameter is 20.59 mm
So, you do not need the late bushing, that will not fit your 23.29 mm rod.
Late bushing (so wrong for you) is 914.424.224.03

Early bushing inside diameter is bigger (914.424.224.00) but I do not have an exact measurement right now. I think it is like 24-26mm.
it is shown in the pic in my bushing topic
