Hey everyone,

After lurking around here for years, I finally found myself a 914. Picked it up today and began the 30 min drive home — things started relatively well when the car was cold, but soon after warming up it would no longer idle, basically stalling as soon as I took it into neutral. Had to keep restarting it at every stop with the throttle completely down to get it going again.

The car is a 1972 1.7 allegedly converted to a 2.0 (although I'm probably the 7th owner, and I haven't found the serial number yet, so I actually have no idea what's in it).

After searching around here, I've found pointers to the AAR and Brad Anders's detailed info on diagnosing FI and idle problems — unfortunately I don't really have the time or space to get into this kind of troubleshooting right now.

Hoping somebody might point me to a reputable shop in Toronto that could help be get this car going again?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Gord

Perhaps it's the ' neutral switch ', try not moving to neutral, in gear, with clutch in.
Complicated fault diagnosis of a complex analog fuel injection system.
There is a cure.

Check all hose connections, a vacuum leak will go lean at idle, causing stall.

Check if your CHT sensor is shot or has a broken wire. Even though you don’t have time or space, go through Brad Anders diagnosis so you can understand what is going on.

Distributor may be corroded in a fixed advance position.
Vacuum cannister corroded, hose leak.
Timing set wrong.
Fuel leanout at idle, the symptom.

A vacuum leak with Djet WILL result in a high idle. If the issue is stalling/dying look elsewhere.

Tune up with points, condenser, valve adjust then-
Start with timing - time the engine to 28 degrees before TDC at 3500rpms! Full advance at this rpm.
then the air bypass screw to set the idle speed
if the engine is warmed up, set the idle mix screw on the ECU to best running condition. Adjust it slowly seeing what effect it has one click at a time as it take a minute to adjust the mixture.

Thanks everyone!

Update: I found Scott Lyons at German Supply in Etobicoke, who got it sorted for me. Timing/dwell did need adjustment, along with replacing pretty much every hose in the engine bay to eliminate vacuum leaks.

Discovered in the process that a PO broke at least 6 fins off the cooling fan, so now I'm looking for a replacement fan.

Scott's a good guy, he doesn't know a lot about 914's, but he knows the type 4 engine.
I likely have a fan, but you would have to clean it up and re-mark it for a 2.0 914.
