Trying to figure out how it works, I do see on the flap where to connect it, but can't figure out where it goes below for hook up?

There should be a brass grommet in the door pad for the bottom end of the spring.

It is unnecessary and difficult to install.
Gravity does a fine job of keeping the lid down.
.....on the other hand, I always install them on my own cars.

I've no grommet, just a small hole in the door frame itself. The trick, for me anyway, is to attach the spring to the door and lid before attaching the assembly itself onto the door. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
