I had a 914 parts car on the trailer backwards when the trunk popped open at 75 mph, it became part of the scrap pile

Looks like the end fastening were missing, pretty sure they mount via tabs on to the very front of the fenders.

Maybe only rated for 130. Is that a washer laying near the end?

Top speed on the 944 turbo S was 162mph from the factory, I've never had one blow up on me on the many times I've gone over 130mph.

A strip of racer tape (or something clear) to keep air from entering the leading edge?

if properly attached, it's impossible for the header panel to fold backwards like that at speed. early 944s were welded in place; later 944s like the S2 were bolted in place.

the panel is held on by four bolts with washers that go into slot on the body. There are supposed to be a 10mm bolt on each end that were not there and then there are 4 screws at the top by the hood.

The fact that the 2 10 mm bolts were missing is the reason it came loose IMHO

Some hardware either failed or wasn't there.
