I think I know the answer, but to make sure, I could use some confirmation on the route of the wiring harness at the front end of the tunnel. Some cars have a hole at the front of the recess nearest the forward hatch, and the harness goes inside the tunnel, and exits the side by the pedals. Mine has no hole, and the cable runs on top of the tunnel--right?

What year is your 914?
Early cars harness goes below where you show.

Mine is a 73 with a 10/72 build date. But definitely no opening at the forward end of the front recess.
