Question on this 914, Searching Options

Hello 914World! I am a new member looking for a 914. I owned a 1975 2.0 and a 1970 914-6 back in the day. Prob. Can’t afford a 6, but am feeling the pull to get back into one. Watching sites for a while and am curious what you guys think of this car and dealer.

Looks too good to be true. Nice looking car but lots of little things drag it down. For that $$ I’d like more originality. Aftermarket front valance, aftermarket wheels (most likely - real Fuchs would not have black paint), fuel injection removed, battery hold down wrong. Aggressive use of armorall on the interior always makes me wonder why.
You can find a better car for the money if you’re patient. Put a WTB in the classifieds here and spend some time getting up to speed. Good luck.

I'm picking nits here, but the upside down drivers side front turn signal lens is indicative of the lack of detail that probably went into this car.

They did spent a lot of time dousing it in armor all though ...

Horrible quality (low resolution) pictures. Hard to make out details. But, if I saw the car in person, based upon its current configuration, I would be offering about $25K. The repaint looks like medium quality, the missing interior backed light, the missing FI, the painted wheels, the wrong front valance, the hood emblem, painted bumpers, badly aligned eyebrows, all factor into my decision. Oh, I do not believe that is a 26K mile car either. More like at least 126K miles or more.

All that aside, it is still a car worth buying, understanding it needs work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I appreciate all the comments. Guess I will be patient and try to get more up to speed. Had my 914s in the 1980s and they were pretty new and bullet proof. Only thing broke was an accelerator cable on my ‘75 2.0.

mythical interior lights can be found in junk yards.
late beetle - exact same.
i scoured a rural junk yard here about 10-15 years back and found 2 and put them in the spares box. glad i did. very fragile items as plastic deplasticizes.
by now vw boys and girls might have picked junkyards everywhere all clean but.

Spend some time looking on world so you know the points to look for. These cars have gone up a lot and while some people will not know just how much their car is worth on a given month and year the question is it worth it.

Right car with low mileage original with the fuel injection. I would rather have an original paint car so I can see just how that car really is because shiny paint can hide a lot.
We have seen some real crap over the years covered with bondo and shiny. As the guys have said. No interior light is no big deal. Now a better question would be ? and why is there a chrome button in center counsel and no Fuel Injection is a huge deal. The mileage is not real or if it is it has turned over one two or three times.

When you see all records from day one and proof of this mileage it is BS. Or seeing this car before the body work and paint. Plus, why would this car need a rebuild engine at such low mileage. Keep looking here as there have been some great cars that have come along over the years. A few that I have Bought and sold

I will have the crew proof read my ad later this year to ensure I have included the word Rust a correct amount of times, and possibly in random areas.

cocoa mats look like they might be the real deal from back in the day.
i had a set in mine when i bought it in 89 and still have them.
identical mats. colour. foot pad. standard issue dealer options.
(know you can get remakes, but they don't look like them - but photos hard to know).

shift lever knob is also original dealer mod option available back then. leather if you didn't like bakerlite. similar version had porsche emblem was offered. along with the small steering wheel mod (dealers did that one too though not on this).

a funny car - its all there by the looks of it.
inners are very clean. may have been resprayed in there?
but the front trunk area looks very clean, stickers all there etc.

just very shiny.
and EFI is long gone.

i'd guess its a once around the clock job.

gold letters on engine lid when should be silver.
but that was a common tart up in the 80s.
along with the rear 911 reflector bar.

it looks a lot like a lot of cars i looked at back in 89.
same sort of mods very common.
front spoiler, carb conversion etc.

wonder if its a kind of time capsule from the late 80s that has been resurrected and glossed up a lot.

as noted - wheels are recent ad on.

the steelie spare with a cinturato P3 on it confuses the picture.
thats an old spare tyre if i am not mistaken?

the thing that really glares for me is the alum silver sill thresholds.
they should be black plastic on a 74.
they have definitely been replaced.

and a cali dash would be cracked? if original.
they were even cracked in 1989. maybe only one crack. but cracked.

Good insights and interesting point on the Pirelli P3s. They were a cheaper replacement for CN 36 tires in the late 70s/early 80s. Don’t know when Pirelli quit making them, but could be a 40 year old tire.
