Definitely some welding. I'm hoping not a LOT of welding. Painting. A lot of wrenching. I think I bought it because of the pretty engine. Prior owner started the resto then passed away. Current owner is a 914 guy, finished building the engine after FAT built the long block and then decided to punt on the project. New floors are tacked into place. The 5 green gauges also pulled me in. Leather seats are still in pristine condition. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) Non numbers matching engine is a positive for me since I don't care and it cost me less. I thought about doing a six conversion but after adding up all the parts and work - oil tank, engine mounts, axles, wiring, adding weight and needing bigger brakes etc, etc, I reversed course and now planning all stock except for one of Ben's mufflers. Congrats Mark! I don't know how anyone could have said no to the pretty engine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) Sounds maybe like IT found YOU, instead of YOU finding IT? Either way, it's a destiny thing. Gotta go with destiny. |

Ooh, I owned a '69 912 long ago. Silver with chrome in perfect condition, it was the most beautiful thing I ever owned. Sold it for a song due to poverty. I really miss that car. But the 914 drove much better.

Nice acquisition, Mark (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) ... now you won't be bugging me about buying mine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)
Keep the Type-616 motor in it, much more nimble handling than with a 911 motor (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

Good for you Mark, congrats. That’s you! Fingers crossed minimal welding.
The engine looks awesome. Yes I’d keep the mechanical stock , but sure ,dress it up cosmetically. The R look would be the E-ticket. Look forward to seeing it in person. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

I’d build it with the OEM engine. Who cares if it’s not fast. It cool!

I’d build it with the OEM engine. Who cares if it’s not fast. It cool! I agree. Once it's up and running I might try building in lightness. Remove parts, put them aside and replace with lighter pieces. Between bumpers, engine lid, seats, wheels and some other parts, I think 150-200lbs is possible. A lexan rear window only saves 15lbs but its high and far back enough that it might help. Fiberglass light buckets are a lot lighter than oem. A lightweight exhaust is the perfect spot to save weight. So there's still plenty of opportunity to let the sickness take hold. The current owner checked with fat and was told it should be a 115-120hp engine so that would be similar to an early 911 but 200lbs less. |

Are you keeping or targeting to sell? If keeping build your vision and don't look back. If selling do a nice driver level without mods and should fetch really good money. 912's are getting loved these days.

If I mod, I'm thinking only parts that can be removed/bolted on the car. It's fun to dream. Even though I don't care about numbers matching or correct paint, it was originally light ivory so that will work fine with my vision. |

Looks terrific.
My son always wanted me to have a hood badge and now with the 912, it’s legal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Nice score Mark! Any long nose 911/912 that can be saved is a find for sure.

I have probably 100 in my 356 due to the 1772cc setup and it's good enough to keep up with traffic. |

Mark,
Good luck on this 912. I think it was a good find for you. Buying right in a special market that is increasing is a winner formula. I have a lot of memories of my buddie getting one of these in the early 70s He kept blowing up the Eng. Very shiny red paint Bk interior. Bob B |

My 68 came with a whale tail. Yanked that off for 20#s. Bought a fg decklid since the original has holes drilled in it for the tail. Fg lid a whole pound lighter! Pulled off the fg rear bumper center portion to go back to stock. Stock was another pound lighter! Most significant weight savings was ditching the 40# 16x7 fake Fuchs with 205.55s, and installing 25# 15x5.5 951 spares with 185.60s. 15#s per corner!! |

I know I will change the seats. My wife worked surgical shock trauma and knows a headrest is crucial to prevent what they call a “hangman’s fracture”. |
