Definitely some welding. I'm hoping not a LOT of welding. Painting. A lot of wrenching. I think I bought it because of the pretty engine. Prior owner started the resto then passed away. Current owner is a 914 guy, finished building the engine after FAT built the long block and then decided to punt on the project. New floors are tacked into place. The 5 green gauges also pulled me in. Seats are still in pristine condition. wub.gif

Non numbers matching engine is a positive for me since I don't care and it cost me less.

I thought about doing a six conversion but after adding up all the parts and work - oil tank, engine mounts, axles, wiring, adding weight and needing bigger brakes etc, etc, I reversed course and now planning all stock except for one of Ben's mufflers.

Light ivory is original. I like the 911R look.

Score! You are going to love having the 912. Familiar but distinct driving experience, and key boatload of options on where you go with it if you decide to deviate from stock.

Make sure to come join us over on the 912 forum, really great community there.

Congratulations!

Sweet looking car Mark - congrats! beerchug.gif

Congratulations Mark, nice looking 912... was the motor already done?!?

A 912 R would be a fine direction to take, always liked the minimalist feel of the factory racers. Post a build thread!

Congrats Mark! I don't know how anyone could have said no to the pretty engine. drooley.gif Sounds maybe like IT found YOU, instead of YOU finding IT? Either way, it's a destiny thing. Gotta go with destiny.

Ooh, I owned a '69 912 long ago. Silver with chrome in perfect condition, it was the most beautiful thing I ever owned. Sold it for a song due to poverty. I really miss that car. But the 914 drove much better.

You’re the man! Nice SWB. I am in dealings with something similar. This will be fun.

Nice acquisition, Mark cheer.gif ... now you won't be bugging me about buying mine poke.gif

Keep the Type-616 motor in it, much more nimble handling than with a 911 motor shades.gif
Dion
Good for you Mark, congrats. That’s you! Fingers crossed minimal welding.
The engine looks awesome. Yes I’d keep the mechanical stock , but sure ,dress it up cosmetically. The R look would be the E-ticket. Look forward to seeing it in person.

I’d build it with the OEM engine. Who cares if it’s not fast. It cool!

I agree. Once it's up and running I might try building in lightness. Remove parts, put them aside and replace with lighter pieces. Between bumpers, engine lid, seats, wheels and some other parts, I think 150-200lbs is possible. A lexan rear window only saves 15lbs but its high and far back enough that it might help. Fiberglass light buckets are a lot lighter than oem. A lightweight exhaust is the perfect spot to save weight. So there's still plenty of opportunity to let the sickness take hold.

The current owner checked with fat and was told it should be a 115-120hp engine so that would be similar to an early 911 but 200lbs less.
BillJ
Are you keeping or targeting to sell? If keeping build your vision and don't look back. If selling do a nice driver level without mods and should fetch really good money. 912's are getting loved these days.

Right now the target is just to get it in paint. If I mod, I'm thinking only parts that can be removed/bolted on the car. It's fun to dream. Even though I don't care about numbers matching or correct paint, it was originally light ivory so that will work fine with my vision.

I got one about 8 years ago

Edit: Good luck with the restoration

Looks terrific.

My son always wanted me to have a hood badge and now with the 912, it’s legal. biggrin.gif

Nice score Mark! Any long nose 911/912 that can be saved is a find for sure.

Nice, 15-120 in a 912 would be a blast. I have probably 100 in my 356 due to the 1772cc setup and it's good enough to keep up with traffic.

Mark,

Good luck on this 912.
I think it was a good find for you. Buying right in a special market that is increasing is a winner formula. I have a lot of memories of my buddie getting one of these in the early 70s He kept blowing up the Eng. Very shiny red paint Bk interior.

My 68 came with a whale tail.
Yanked that off for 20#s.
Bought a fg decklid since the original has holes drilled in it for the tail.
Fg lid a whole pound lighter!
Pulled off the fg rear bumper center portion to go back to stock.
Stock was another pound lighter!
Most significant weight savings was ditching the 40# 16x7 fake Fuchs with 205.55s, and installing 25# 15x5.5 951 spares with 185.60s.
15#s per corner!!

I would love to have a set of outlaw wheels.

I know I will change the seats. My wife worked surgical shock trauma and knows a headrest is crucial to prevent what they call a “hangman’s fracture”.
BK911
Fuchs are the usual go to.
15x6 are 16# each.
951 spares 15x5.5 are 11#s!!
I LOVE the steelie look, but 15x5.5 are about 20#s each.
The 951 spare looks like the steelie but are aluminum.
Your 67 would have had 15x4.5.
No idea how much they weigh.

No matter what you decide to do it should be fun and rewarding.
Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Way to go Mark. I'm sure you'll make her into something very special.

Congrats great looking car

Get a set of 951 spares, they are silly light! Next time I need tires (probably now) I’ll swap over to them on the 356.

I wish I could figure out how to mount stock hubcaps did the full sleeper look.
I do know a 356 that made custom center caps for them, but you’d need to mill the mount.

I will keep my eyes open for 951 spares. I need to find a deal since guys are asking big money for them these days. I was able to get a good deal on 2 flat Fuchs so now I have a set of 5. The steelies that come with it will sit in corner for a while. Having wheels that fit the 912 and a 914 is a bonus.

I always wanted a car with green gauges. wub.gif

Post a wtb on dorki, there are 944 guys there that might have leads, I got my 5th for spare tire use locally.

Since you asked heres a pic of the 68 with the 951 wheels on it. biggrin.gif
68s came with spacers, which I don't have, so im still playing with proper figment.
Tires are 185.60s, same as i run on the teener.
