For trouble free 914 operation, check the following before going on a trip:
valve adjustment tire pressure adjustment 26 F 29 rear lubricate all suspension bushings check front wheel bearing play check rear brake pad venting clearance check condition of brake fluid check clutch adjustment check dwell reading check timing check vacuum advance and retard, check centrifugal advance change oil and clean strainer change air filter change fuel filter check running fuel pressure (28 lbs) check all lights for proper operation and aim front headlights check and lubricate headlight mechanisms check operation of shifter check operation of accelerator cable and make sure it is very smooth lubricate top seals with silicone grease check condition of tires and riviera wheels for runout check rear wheel bearing play check tightness of rear swing arms check charging system for a charge rate between 13.6 and 13.9 check condition and tightness of alternator belt check cooling fan for debris check for any oil leaks with engine running and hot check for any exhaust leaks check condition and tightness of transmission rear ground strap and battery ground strap check tightness for the top of the engine block control unit white ground leads check oil pressure switch for tightness and leaks check operation of heater control flapper boxes and engine compartment blower motor check instrument lights check wiper motor and its speeds check operation of turn signal switch for cancellation check horn(s) check steering column for tightness check fit of windows check locks for easy locking and unlocking lubricate trunk hinge cups lubricate all locks check rear tail light housings for a good seal to the body check trunk light for proper operation check torque of wheel bolts to 90 ftlbs check underbody for damage check interior mirror for tightness of arm to base check transmission and clutch for smooth operation check fuel pump for excessive noise check evaporative system for tightness including fuel filler neck seal check fresh air fan for proper operation check cigar lighter for proper operation check instruments and odometer for proper operation check high low beam relay for proper operation check sequence of fuses and make sure that the fuse cover is installed check emergency brake for proper operation check interior light for proper operation and door switches check seat sliders and lubricate as necessary test drive and make any running notes check battery condition and tray and stand for debris or corrosion and correct as necessary check engine fuel hoses and under tank fuel hoses for condition and note and repair any leaks, make sure non intrusive hose clamps are installed check condition of relay board and relays and make sure a good cover has been installed check rear window and make sure it is tightly sealed |

Thanks George. A helpful list to be sure. Probably by the time I do all of this my vacation will be over and I'll have run out of time to take my trip (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I'll be sure to get a cigar so I can check the cigar lighter, although here in the Bay Area it's not likely to be a cigar that will be getting lit...
