There have been several recent posts about members acquiring 928s & 924s and I have just picked up this 1986 944 Turbo!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a one owner car with a Clean CarFax that was purchased new from Steve Taub in Santa Monica with extensive maintenance history. Paint is pretty oxidized from being outside the last few years. It has got original Fuchs and optional Limited Slip Differential. After taking care of some deferred maintenance, I am going to drive this thing like crazy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) If values continue to pop, I will paint it in the spring and decide whether to keep her or not based on the ownership experience. With values on the rise for transaxle cars, it looks like their time has come! |

You will be amazed how well a bunch of compound & polish and a handful of pads can turn out.

oh - you'll have a blast with that. I had an 86 and an 89 and they swallow a lot of road. Quickly. I think the turbo lag is fun and they have a real personality.

A good bud of mine said that in the 2 years he owned a 951 it was a perfect canyon car + highway Cruiser.
Problems were; sticky parking brake cable, and various drops of coolant from aging hose, clamps, joints // just sounds like normal wear + use things. Can't go wrong, like you say transaxle Porsche values will only go up ! |

Yay, another 951 owner! They really are pretty amazing cars. A lot of the maintenance is not too bad on them, such as timing and balance belts, water pump, etc, but they definitely have their own unique challenges.
If you want, check out the video my brother did on my car: Transaxle Greatness: Why the 944 Turbo is an 80s icon Seems like there’s a number of 944 owners here, so be sure to ask if you need advice. Also Rennlist 944 Turbo sub-forum is a huge resource. For parts, check out Paragon Parts, Lindsey Racing (dangerous waters!), Only944, 944Online. Have fun! |

You guys are KILLING me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . Are parts available for 944/951 and how expensive are they? Parts are definitely available for the 944/951 cars. The price depends on the part but expect to pay the typical "Porsche Tax" for any part you buy. They are a lot of fun. They are reasonably fast stock and can go up from there all the way to stupid fast depending on how much work and $$ you want to throw at them. I rebuilt the engine and did some upgrades on my old 86 951 and got 323/326 hp/trq at the wheels. The relatively light weight and that much power made it a beast. ![]() My current 944 S2 rebuild/upgrade project is on a whole different level. ![]() |

Thanks everyone for chiming in and sharing info and pics of your cars:
@Chris914n6 Paint correction is in the plans, however there are a lot of contaminants that will remain in the finish. @burton73 Yes, the wheels are 7s up front and 8s in the rear with 951 part numbers. These were only available for the '86 MY @ValcoOscar P-Car hoarder for sure, however I learned from the best! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) @FlacaProductions Love your black with linen pics, very Miami Vice and hopefully you wore the blazer with shoulder pads to go with it! @Second Wind Not a CG rendering, just a good wash! @Mayne Will check out the video for sure! |

That’s funny I also bought a 944 this year.
86 NA white over red. Really wishing I bought a turbo. They have lots of weird issues but nothing is super crazy to deal with other than say the clutch. That’s obnoxious to change. |

Whoa! Seeing this for the first time. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Congrats Jeffrey! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) I always wanted a 944. I believe like the 914 they also suffered the rejection from the Porsche purist at the time. That is probably why I always liked them. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Sounds like a very nice find! Enjoy! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |
