It is a side shifter, and I definitely have a couple bushing on order now...

Is the tangerine racing firewall shift rod bearing worth it as a 'while I'm in there'?

not a bad idea, but I have refreshed a few side shift setups and not touched the firewall bush. everything but. Shifting is positive with very little/no side to side movement with the gear lever

@notlance

Hey Lance! Glad to see you're still on the road, and that your current issue has nothing to do with the engine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) .

Sounds like a "rebuild" of the shifter may also be in order. I'll put in this post a couple of threads that, if you haven't already found them, will likely be informative. These are all the ones I've collected over the years when taking on shifting related tasks. There are also helpful links in these threads.

I haven't done the Tangerine firewall bushing, but seems like the consensus is overwhelmingly positive. You can, of course, get carried away with "while I'm there" type tasks. When last I replaced the bushings I just went with the ones that came in the kit I got from AA and didn't go any further. Your choice as to how far you want to go.

Can't for the life of me figure out where this guy would go - maybe not for my car?

I want to do the job right and change out any bushings that might need it.

Definitely a new housing bushing, cone nuts and knuckle bushings all definitely worn out, doing the firewall as a 'while I'm in there' as there is some play there , but cannot find where this one could even go

Read through all the linked articles, amazing resources.. thank you! I had seen two of them scouring but hadn't come across the rest and all were helpful!

And one other point - my car came with a tail shifter but was converted to a side shifter before I got the car.

The bit of shift linkage that runs through the firewall is ~20.11mm, and I can not find a good answer on which one that is. I think it is the side shift unit becuase I am under the impression you cannot mix and match, just want to make sure.

Hello,

Looking at the cone screw / set screw for the rear shift linkage / transmission linkage, is that screw properly seated in the shift linkage detent? For some reason it looks like there is more of the cone screw showing than what I would expect if the tip of the cone was seated properly in the detention.

Maybe double check that?

We discussed earlier about whether you had swapped in a later side shift transmission. That means there are a few changes to remember (Suggest getting a notebook and keeping track of what has been modified and with what parts - helps you keep your sanity. We now keep an electronic spreadsheet for each car, before it was on paper.).

There should be a conversion firewall bushing (special bushing that isn't a tailshift or sideshift, may be hard to track one down lately? Ask your favorite vendor. ) the side shift and tailshift have different firewall holes and different style shift rods

Take a look at #14 and #22 (reference your post #65). It's for a tailshift transmission, which you no longer have.

Again, when you figure out what's been modified and with what parts, strongly suggest you note it in a logbook. Makes future repairs for you or the next owner easier. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Yup! Just hoping someone with an original side shift can confirm that the diameter of the shift rod that runs through the center tunnel is ~20.11mm.

There are two options, the larger and the smaller rod and I do not know which the 20.11mm is.

If I understand things properly, the tangerine racing firewall bushing comes in two sizes and apparently can be installed on any model year. My next step is calling them about the size of each if no one has the measurement on hand.

On the record keeping front, I keep a digitized record (including pics) of everything I have done to the car in the last four or five years offline on my computer, and it has proven very useful already, I can only imagine in 20 years!

TRP, you have a good eye!; I started backing it off before realizing I should hold off complete disassembly before snapping a couple pics for the world. It was (I think) properly seated

It would also be immensely helpful if someone could measure the OD of the bronze bushing, I am going to turn on my lathe for the rear shifter console (Seen in post 67).

Otherwise I'll pull it out and measure, but would love to avoid that

Went ahead and looked it up for you. Please note there are other versions available. Make your own choice on how to proceed.

or you could just do THIS

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif)

PS you appear to be missing both the front coupler boot & rear cover + rod boot. Not essential but will certainly cut down the wear & tear on bushing s from road debris and grit.

@914werke you are right about the missing covers - I actually have had them sitting on the shelf for over 4 years.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) just one of those things I kept forgetting about... will do this time for sure

And none of my shops's oil impregnated bronze is small enough to justify making into a bushing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

so ordered yours (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

It has been several years since I did a bushings renew, but I do recall having my local machinist making new bushings made from Teflon, I did not like the clearances with aftermarket stuff.

Update - it lives again!

All the bushings swapped out - except the rear one I ordered from 914werke, still waiting on it but machined a temp one out of brass. Added the covers as well.

Shifts sooo much better, and I can actually hit all gears (reverse I missed you...)

I built a boat!

Now, the 914 being my only car I of course needed to mount the boat to my 914.

Fabbed up a quick and easy rack using the ski rack slots/holes, aluminum extrusion, and wood.

I plan on adding bow and stern tie downs but it has survived the hwy!
