Thats High Performance House all right. Rich Bontempi. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) NOT in the city of Placerville though, but instead in Redwood City, CA. http://www.highperformancehouse.com/ Not sure why it says Placerville in the footer ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) PS: Rich has been trying to sell the place for at least 15 years now. |

I have bought a few very rare parts from Rich and appreciate that I could get them. That said, each time I swore never to return because the prices are unexpectedly high. Whereas with AA, George sold us a couple of NOS carpet sets that were very expensive but they still felt like a deal.

The problem with parts stashes like this is you can get wow'ed by the volume, without realizing that you will be living with most of it when you are done, just as this guy is. When you have someone who was an active shop and active seller of parts for years and years and they have whole racks of a part like doors, hoods, engine bits, all that tells you one thing, that's the stuff that doesn't sell.
In the Porsche world 356 stuff is pretty rare but there is still stuff that will never sell. So when I look at a parts stash and the guy had 25 heads, 10 brake drums, 5 engine cases, and a bunch of engine bits I pass. I already have a lifetime supply that I will die with. This stuff is going on all over the country. Unrealistic price expectations for commercial businesses and commercial property.
Try working out the business case that will support an $11M “investment” in property and inventory. It doesn’t work. I’m not an expert on CA real estate but suspect that if the property alone had that sort of value or prospect for significant appreciation it would have sold and someone would simply be scrapping what’s onsite. |

How large is the market for what looks like 100s of used 914 doors, lids and tops? At high end pricing? My guess? Not very. Semi trailer full of cardboard boxes and pallets required.

silly prices. take a couple million and walk away.
Supertec runs a small parts business aside from the engine building business. Henry is realistic about it and knows the real value will be when it sells some day. |

Your kids don't want your parts. Get them out in the world to circulate. I have met a few guys like this selling parts. They know of the top end value of the part and want that value. They bought wholesale, sat on them as an investment and want to sell high retail to make a profit. Sometimes the market passes them by. That German hoarder guy we saw the video of will be in this boat at some point in his future. It was a good plan at the time but they lost site of the business plan and it turned emotional, not good business.
I contacted him in the past for parts, he had what I wanted but too much for my project. |

The high price reflects the location of the property (bay area-the bay area keeps getting larger and larger). It may still be unrealistic, but folks think that anything remotely "bay area" should be 400 times the rest of the planet. Don't get me wrong, I loved living there but the crazy folks with more money than sense drove up real estate prices so much that they are now unaffordable for those that drove up the prices!

Like Adam, we’ve purchased some big part stashes. It’s expensive to move and store. Our last big haul, from a shop in Texas, we left all the 914 parts that weren’t from a six. Crawling around a loft in Texas heat, packing up, loading the trucks, driving up to PA, unloading, unpacking, sorting, etc. - the novelty wears off and anything that isn’t needed or profitable is just surplus. If you’ve ever paid money to store parts, you realize at a certain point, it’s more profitable to throw them away than to store and try to sell.
The guy with 50 of each - empty transmission cases, hoods, struts and trailing arms in their possession is just delaying the inevitable trip to the metal recycling yard. |

Breaks my heart to think of parts I might need going into a scrap metal bin for salvage, but that's the economy of the situation. On a much smaller scale, I have moved bins of parts from other projects from the garage to the basement. I considered a storage unit. In less than a year what I pay for the unit would exceed the value of the parts. My kids don't want my parts either.

Then there is the issue of what was saved and what was actually good. I tried to purchase an early door a couple months ago. I had a member here check out what was pulled from the rack . They were not usable in my book. So 300 doors and the 4 that were pulled for vieing should have gone to the scrap.

Definitely feel sorry for the loss to his family. I’m sure that guy was a real character. I had a tab open to his ebay store I kept open for a NOS 1.8 vac can that I was hoping the price would drop to a reasonable level one day… he was asking $395! Now it looks like it’ll be gone forever… bummer. Hoarding never pans out!
