Useful material for owners of '71 914s 1971s had a 'one year only' interior that had a similar grain. Looks like the thicker material used in 70. The 71 used “shiny leather” a thinner, smother looking material with a more reflective shine. Are you sure? Like Rory said, all my ‘71’s have/had elephant hide. I have a tan interior from an early ‘70. I’ll dig it out. |

Yes please. Would love to see it (501 interior according to the book).
Interesting that the 401 seems to have an even wider grain. |

Also got a couple PM's we will be adding this to our vinyl door DIY kits, just will take a few weeks to process materials so we know we have enough. We are doing up seats and back pad, with this material.

you are both wrong. The material comes from the Endangered Nauga. The end product is naugahyde. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) |

Here’s an early 2 piece door panel. The vinyl has grain but isn’t elephant hide. There is no foam behind the vinyl. Came from a one owner car in NJ that rusted out. Had a lot of unique early ‘70 details.
Door pockets are also tan but the door pulls and door top bolsters are black. Factory two tone. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() |

Got to thinking, hey, I have a 71. The one that Taylor and I picked up in Billings at 2AM.
So knowing this is a European Delivery 71. Production date was a late 70, but it's sold as a 71. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |

Seems to match the book for 71. So, where would the cutoff for the larger grain be?

Useful material for owners of '71 914s 1971s had a 'one year only' interior that had a similar grain. Looks like the thicker material used in 70. The 71 used “shiny leather” a thinner, smother looking material with a more reflective shine. @garland pretty sure this is correct for the 71. I wouldn’t really call it shiny. Was it the 70 that had an even larger grain? |

Yea, the 71 definitely has a different sheen to the surface than 70

So the 71 that I have 4712902333 is definitely more like the 70 , it also matched the book for 71 as the 701 sample.
So my question is does anybody have a Vin number for the "dinosaur " skin?? I guess that's what I'd call it considering the grain is wider. |
