I have spent the last hour cringing at YouTube videos watching guys gouge the **** out of sealing surfaces with a screwdriver trying to split a case. I have split dozens of vw 1200 cases but this is my first two litre. I don't want to screw it up. All fasteners are removed. Do I bang or pry?

Small bolt on front near center?
Small bolt in rear near RMS?

I’m a bit of a farmer on this step
I cut a 2X4 and use that to hit the case.
Or a piece of oak
I never hit the case with a metal anything

There’s a tool which spreads the case apart using the oil pump bore. That…or get a pack of wood shims and gently tap them in to wedge open the case. Resist the urge to grab a putty knife or screwdriver (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

This will probably be the last engine rebuild I will do. Don't want to mess it up. Thanks for the response.

All bolts removed. Where do I hit?

Both ends

Oil fill, vent area
There is also a knub on the other end
Using wood allows for a bit more forceful swing

Start with this: https://www.jbugs.com/product/16-9601.html
I just split my 2.0 case last week.
Tighten the nut till that part of the case begins to separate.
Then I used plastic pry tools (Harbor Freight) like these: https://www.harborfreight.com/nylon-pry-bar...iece-63594.html
Like wedges, I hammered them into the gap on opposite side of the case.
The case will scar the plastic tools, not the other way 'round!
I had to hammer them in pretty hard to get the adhesive to break.
They didn't leave a single scratch!

I used the same case splitter as mentioned above.

Only way to do it in my book.

I put a piece of "gorilla" tape on each of the shoes to protect the oil pump bore.

Worked super easy. I did not need any wedges at all but the plastic wedges are the only ones to use if you need them.

You called that one right. Easy with the proper tool and I did waste a couple Harbor Freight door panel pry tools.

I use a turnbuckle (available at local hardware store) like this.

Attached Image

Put it over studs and front and back studs on the motor. I apply a little pressure and if it doesn't separate, double check for missed nut (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) . If all nuts are undone then a little tap with hammer usually gets things moving Can work back and forth from front to back, top to bottom until apart. Note that I am usually splitting 911 cases.
