I would like to learn more about 914 transmissions- what cars came with what, serial numbers, and how to identify them. Examples- 901 vs 915, side shift vs tail shift, etc. Thanks!

Tail shift has a shift rod that travels all the way to the rear of the trans. Hence tail shifter. Bet you can guess what a side shifter trans is. They used the tail shift until the 73 production came out with the side shift. It is common to convert an early 914 to the later side shift. 901s were used in early 911s

All series-produced 914s used 901-derived transmissions. None used the 915 transmission.
In stock form, all four-cylinder 914s had the same gearing. All of the 914-6es had the same gearing as each other, but not as the 914-4. The 25 copies of the 914-6 "Sportomatic" had different gears, but you are vanishingly unlikely to see a Sporto 914 trans. Gears with different ratios could be ordered through the racing department. Very few if any of those were installed at the factory when the car was originally built. The four-cylinder cars in the 1970-1972 model years used the "tail shift" transmission, where the linkage goes all the way to the tail-cone of the trans and goes in there. The six-cylinder cars all used a different tail-shift mechanism. This was simpler, having fewer joints and moving parts than the -4 version, and was generally better shifting. The 73-76 914s used the "side shift" transmission, where the linkage goes into the trans in front of the intermediate plate. This linkage was simpler than the tail-shift, having fewer joints and fewer wear points, and is regarded as an improvement over both the tail shift versions. --DD |
