I can offer good personal experiences regarding Chris' "B Spec" engine.

Short-ish version of the story: buddy and I are prepping the 914 for the 2019 Lime Rock Historics over the Labor Day weekend. We're 3-4 days away from trailering to the track and I take the car out to the local industrial park for some quick carb tuning (the car is actually reg'd and insured for the street...not suitable for the street, mind you, but legal).

As I'm making a couple full-bore runs I suddenly start hearing a loud BANG BANG BANG! coming from the engine...it continued to run, I still had oil pressure, and I was a half-mile from home so I baby'd it there. After some basic troubleshooting we discovered that the front crank pulley was not moving fore and aft when we moved the flywheel fore and aft...I had broken the crankshaft.

We were about to pack it in for the year when I commiserated with Chris on our problem...and he offered to me the use of his 1.8L "B Spec" engine for the upcoming weekend! My buddy and I drove over to look at it, and mulled over what was involved in installing it in just a few days. We would have to reroute/replace some fuel and oil lines (he uses a different dry sump than mine) and some wiring and sensor changes, but given the engine would bolt right up to my transaxle, we gave it a go and had the car running in a couple days.

Engine ran GREAT! We had to clean out the carbs and reattach some valve cover vent lines, but it all ran great and we had a wonderful time with it. Chris even let me take it on one extra weekend at New Jersey Lightning, where I have an in-car video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TSpu_T14z8...channel=GregAmy

I wanted to buy the engine at the time instead of rebuilding my 2L (I mean, the 1.8L was already in there!) but Chris had plans to get the race car going...that's changed now I guess but I've already spent the money on my 2L and now I'm unemployed, otherwise that engine would be in my garage right now.

When we removed the 1.8L from my car, we drained the case, squirted some oil into the cylinders, and ensured the carbs were drained of fuel. I'd have zero resistance to bolting this into my car and expecting it to fire up after a few cranks.

Or, if someone is instead interested in a warmed-over 2L then maybe we can make a horse trade so I can buy Chris' 1.8L (which, being smaller, would knock me down a race class with most orgs)...let's chat.

Greg

I'd like to know more about those beeshive valves springs in your A spec engine.. Also, is your belt driven horizontal fan produced local to you? I have a 11 blade fan and fibreglass horizontal shroud. But nothing else.

Here’s a recent picture of the engine.
The cooling system was a product of mine for many years, based on a Corvair fan. Not enough sales to support continued development.
