You’re doing just fine. You have a great attitude towards this. Stay the course and you will have awesome stories to share. Will be following. BTW if that is a Racemark steering wheel, try to preserve that baby as well. If not it’s still a cool looking wheel. Keep going (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Thanks mate im love spending time in my garage. I get my head to relax from work. Radio on, chilled beer or 3 and get something done on one of the cars. Yes its a Racemark wheel . With a faded Porsche horn. Im glad you told me , i thought it was something added to the FrankensteinPorsche out of a summit catalogue. I found some US quarters, pens, ( they love those dash ducts dont they ) 3 Porsche badges , countless washers and nuts everywhere. This car must have rattled its way down the highway like beans in a bladder. |

Looks like lots of work to do, but if you enjoy time in the garage, you should be happy for many months--that was true for me. It sure is a happy place ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

So I managed to get the metal part of the dash out. It was stuck in there pretty bad.
Now its on the bench I got it down to bare on the outside. The inside is going to need a special tool. So many nooks. A glance under the dash at the fuse box showed quite a lot of work to do. Plus it would seem it became a toilet for a certain animal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ar15.gif) Attached thumbnail(s) |

FYI - there is usually a chassis number written on the under side of the top of the dash in crayon / paint pen. You may want to document this while you have the dash out, if the number is still there.
It isn’t hugely important but if you have any interest in documenting the car, I’d write it down before it gets painted over or removed. |

No number under the dash. Just loads of rust. I've cleaned it now and it's drying from a good dose of epoxy primer.
Now I'd like to remove the handbrake lever... It's stuck firm. Any tips? |

Don't know what your plans for the dash are but this thread is worth looking at.

Don't know what your plans for the dash are but this thread is worth looking at. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=369274. Dash is getting retrimmed in leather with French stitching going all round and down the centre console. Seats will be covered in original vinyl on the outside. The insides will be soft leather. I just had my Fiat 124 done and its magnificent. See Pic of my 124. Just finished restoration. ( with double the rust the Porsche has ! ) Im not too keen on the basket weave. I would prefer 2 tone. But im going to sit with the upholsterer in June. We will figure out something i like. Im googling for 914 trim ideas. But its going to be leather. The feel, look and smell just make the difference. So its been raining here for days with the odd burst of sunlight here and there.
However I went on a rampage looking for parts and scored here and there. I managed to find both emergency and headlamp light switches. Why dont they make new ones of these ? I cant find a good quality cigarette lighter and wiper switch. Still on the todo list. They will turn up. I found a new set of seats and back panel, steering and horn plus targa. Now Im waiting for a front floor panel which apparently doesnt come in halves. You get a whole one. Fine its on order. Battery tray has arrived and the hell hole will be cut by my welder as he decided he wanted to make the pieces himself. Ive got the front bumper bolts soaking in WD40 and its the last thing i need to remove from the body. However that flexible bolt on the wiper motor has annoyed me no end. It wont come loose. And the handbrake handle .. wth ...it just wont come off. I got the silencer and heat exchangers off and gave them some TLC. It all looks ok ( ish ) Dashboard is all painted and will go together with the rest of the interior to the upholsterer in a few months. Next gear linkage, clutch cable, and then drop the Engine. Engine, I figure, is like a vegas slot machine.. anything can happen. they say these engines are quite hardy. Im curious. Pics coming up. Loads of fun. |

Use a penetrating oil and/or heat (torch) instead of wd-40 on the bumper bolts.
