Can anyone point me towards a thread that shows the entire procedure to rebuild, align, and adjust a side shifter linkage? Pictures and a parts diagram would be very helpful. Thanks!

It's a straightforward project and all of the parts and pieces are available. If I recall I used a bronze bushing or 2 in place of the factory plastic stuff

All the bushings are pretty much simple and intuitive with the exception of the firewall bushing that gave me some difficulty. HERE is a guide to the firewall bushing.

Both links work fine for me. Maybe some confusion about where this link takes you? It takes you to a dedicated google search engine for 914World, and not to a how-to for the bushing replacement. Bookmark this link to use to search 914World, or simply use google to search the site but put the term "914World" as the first search term. The search function on this site has some usability issues so using google to search this site works better.

This link will take you to info you will need to adjust at the end. The rest of it is taking out old parts and replacing them. Everything you need is available from vendors around here. Just ask where can I get “X”, good chance one of the vendors will lead you to that source. Side shift you have a small metal bushing where the shifter bolts to the rod inside the cab. It’s a pivot. Then the bushing at the firewall. After that is another pivot point where the first part of the rod meets the second rod in the engine compartment. That aluminum pivot can also be rebuilt, kit available. After that you have the bushing at the side shift console on the side of the trans. There is a plastic bushing, available new but also a nice metal bushing from a vendor here. Last is, and I’m going to use a picture, is a plastic cup that is inside the piece mounted on the end of the shifter rod. The pic I’m using is not a stock layout but it shows that piece with the cup inside. It is the cylindrical part, cast metal with that other part going into it. That has a ball and the cup. That’s all I can tell you, there is only one part of the system I didn’t modify. That is why I added this link, Dr Evil helps a guy that had converted get his shifting adjusted correctly. I’ll be using it. Good luck

What Shivers left out was that his rear console has been modified.

He added a second bushing and the aluminum ear it fits into on the back side of that console.

The brass bushing to the right is in the stock location. The one to the left is the mod.

The stock one was originally plastic too.

Another aftermarket part that improves feel is the Tangerine Racing firewall bushing.

This is not really a bushing anymore with Chris's kit. It is a trapped spherical bearing.

Tangerine has more stuff as well.
Here's a kit that includes the rear console mod and a rear shift rod with u-joints.

I believe the "mod" firewall bushing and the brass console bushing are the way to go initially.

Replacing all of the remaining original plastic pieces should be done as well.

Don't forget the little grub screws. Just get new ones.

I would recommend the tangerine system. Installed from the firewall back. real game changer when coupled with a rennshift shifter. went from stirring a weak soup with a broom handle looking for gears to something just under the feel of a gated shifter...
huge improvement

Remember that for best results, you have to rebuild the shifter too.

There is a reverse lockout plate and two plastic bushings in the shifter that wear, and that makes it sloppy.

They are #2, #6 and #8. Our six shifted well until the shifter broke loose at the base. So I stuck an old shifter in it. It shifted terrible after that. The minute I got the shifter arm TIG welded back in and reinstalled it, it started shifting well again.

So don't neglect the shifter in your quest for better shifting.

Dang, you’re right I did not mention 2, 6 and 8 but I did mention 10. Last thing he needs to see is a picture of my shifter. I did mention my console is different.

I just disassembled my shifter and my "guide ring" (91442434302) is cracked. I looked all over the web and nobody caries a replacement. I'm sure I can 3D print one but I'm not sure the PLA will be strong enough.

Any ideas where to find one?
