Today, over to the newest Eastern boundary of the Palisades fire: the 405 freeway in Sepulveda Pass>>yes it's moved east /northeast with wind change. The ground/ air fire fighters are holding the lines in Mandeville Cyn. and the mountain peak at Encino resevoir; keep the fires out of the San Fernando Valley, and WLA. Everything was thrown at the fire 24 hours, as the winds are calm but will pick up 01.13.25.

#914 DC-10 converted tanker, I believe these DC-10s and other models of tanker aircraft are based in Idaho.
Here was his Sunday's flight path in SoCal, looks like San Berdoo airport was its HQ for support this week.
Somewhere high up there flying above all of the helo's, fixed wing and jet aircraft, is the spotter who directs all air drop on targets.

About 12 miles east of Palisades fires; Google
Sunset Fire Los Angeles , occurred 01.07.25, all hot spots out within 24 hours.
All structures OK, about 50 acres of dry brush incinerated.

@JeffBowlsby this scene approx 5-10 minutes after we spotted the fire, Helo's were dropping water on it several hours. Ground crews were protecting homes/ apt buildings at the lower point of the mountain.
Our area of the City has up to par water volume + pressure.

Unbelievable, thats the car from the hagerty commercial "why i drive ..."

Very unique car from my point of view since it features fender flares only on rear and vent holes in the rear deck lid ...

Yes praying for those involved with the fire.

It reminds me of the Colorado Marshall fire in Dec 2021. I live south of Marshall and we are always riding our bicycles in that area. It was crazy to see homes incinerated to white ash. The wind was like a forge that day.

It blew down my fence (see picture) breaking 4 4x6 cedar posts. A bike ride in January after the fire showed just white ash...looked like snow and nothing standing.

We have friends whos house and their neighborhood burned to the ground. They had an open house last month to celebrate moving back into their new home after rebuild. He is daily fighting the insurance company over details. Stuff like the original house didn't have low-e glass, the new one does. I don't believe they even sell non low-e glass anymore. The insurance company considers that an upgrade and does not want to cover the cost.

It's going to be a long process for those whos houses and belongings were burned to get a home rebuilt in L.A.

Thanks - happy to have helped.
My 914 is far, far away…which I usually count as a bad thing.
Grateful today

been keeping up on this on the australian tv news while i have been up country.

calif is like aus, a fire ecology landscape.
i got a good feel for just how dangerous it has been.

good news in all the bad news is the minimal loss of life.
at least we are learning to do that better - both down here and in california.
thats a relief. could have been a lot worse.

loss of property is terrible.
but losing loved ones and friends is way worse.

lost a landscaper mate and colleague in the big one of 09 down here.
still miss him.

my thoughts with 914 world folks in LA.

I'm in NE Pasadena/Altadena right at the genesis of the Eaton Fire. We are mere blocks from Eaton Canyon. I'll get right to it and say somehow the house and 914 survived.

The night the fire started my eldest daughter was already at UCLA (more on that later) and we evacuated my younger (17) daughter and the cat to a friends house further south in Pasadena. My wife and stayed behind with the 3 big dogs as it would be damn near impossible to find a place at the last minute to take them. We had the cars packed, facing out, and ditch bags and leashes at the ready. We did 48 hours straight of mitigation and keeping a defensible space. Chain saw, pole saw, staple gun, ladders... Whatever we could do to keep embers out and limbs off the roof. It was a constant battle. After that it was 2 hours on 2 hours off round the clock for another 48 hours watching for fire. After that the fire danger dropped significantly...

The next few days are a blur... We did find that for some unknown reason there are a swath of houses roughly due south of the genesis of the fire that were spared - ours included. We don't know if it was because the fire immediately split - going east and west or if there was some sort of fire break that they managed to get in place before all hell broke loose. We obviously took wind and smoke damaged, but the house is here and didn't burn.

We were on full lock down for parts of the time, had no potable water until a few days ago, and are still without electricity and natural gas. It's been getting down in to the low 40's outside and the house is in the low 50's. We are snowboarders and campers, so we are well equipped, but we are definitely getting worn down by the cold and lack of utilities.

The 914 has been on jack stands with the front suspension ripped out of it to modify it for a GIANT front bar (41mm) for a few weeks. I was aiming to have the car ready for the first event of the season on the 18th. I did my best to keep it covered in those first 24 hours, but it was futile. Before the ash hit I put the cover in the rear trunk and hoped for the best. As the days wore on and the winds and fire died down, I decided quickly blow it off an to uses a detailer spray and microfiber cloths to remove the bulk of the ash. I didn't want to get it wet because ash was still falling. I got it cleaned up and put the dirty, but ash free cover back on.

We have a very small generator running to keep the fridge cold, charge phones/computers, and most importantly a HEPA filter. My wife had enough mental clarity to tape all the windows, doors, fireplace, and any vent shut as all this was happening. That act alone has likely saved us a ton of work and money.

We are here, the car is here, and we are both safe for now.
